I must say at the outset of this post that the Britsh Brass Band cornet sound is not my cup of tea. I find the incessant fast vibrato unattractive. My ideal Cornet sound is Wynton playing on his Carnival recording. Great depth of tone and musical use of vibrato.

favorite cornet sound this https://youtu.be/Q3nMWbf8_GY but brass band cornet sound, not familiar enough with the genre although I know they do not all use that fast vibrato anymore, I think that is more of a historic thing.

For me, a lyrical sop cornet is the ultimate sound (it would be), though very, very few achieve it - not at all a fan of the overly bright/strident and unbendable sounds that are the current fashion.

The vib is largely a means to an end (it can cover up a few tuning sins) though the fast, constant vib ala McCann isn't really the done thing at the moment - variable speed and intensity of vib, when tastefully done, can add a whole extra dimension...
But I've played with players even in championship section bands who cannot control it brilliantly and indeed some who simply can't do it at all.

PS, on the topic of carnival of venice recordings.. The Wynton recording is fireworks and panache to the very last, but give me Maurice Andre's recording every time - just oozes class and manages to simultaneously make it sound absurdly easy whilst emphasising just how difficult it really is, and with a gorgeous tone to boot.

The reason for the vibrato is that the cornet was originally an instrument to accompany community singing (round the piano, before TV). The cornet mimics classical singers with vibrato and lots of emotion. The vibrato is not continuous - not even Philip's. In fact, he stresses that you need to be able to switch it on and off at will so that it is not interfering with the sound.

YouTube "David Daws". Ignore the vibrato if you must, the pure sound is consistenly the best (imho).

When used correctly vibrato is icing on the cake. Now I have definitely head some that boarders on ridiculous. I prefer the Americanized British brass band style

trumpet56, I think not everybody read your initial post? If I understand correctly, you might be looking for a sound like maybe Gerard Schwarz put out on his album of cornet favourites some time back.

Sound-wise, I think the cornet sounds emanating from the Grimethorpe Colliery Band in the movie Brassed Off are about as good as it gets.

Looks-wise, I think the visuals emanating from the Grimethorpe Colliery Band when Tara Fitzgerald is being featured are about as good as it gets.

And what an amazing player she is - sometimes she can clearly be seen fingering B naturals, and yet beautiful, perfectly in-tune Bb's are sounded. As such her B naturals are just... magic. Okay, I'll stop now...

Yeah, the faked flugelhorn playing was a weak spot in the movie. What about that cornet solo on William Tell, though? Pretty nice!

See how you like Tom Hutchinson. I really like his playing with Cory on Fuego.

Hi

I always think that Laura Hirst has my idea of a brass band cornet tone:

All the best

Lou,

Nice post. You got me thinking about immigrating to a place that has British Brass Bands.

Could I solo without a fast vibrato?

Warm regards,
Grits

I'm a fan of the Black Dykes.......

......and not just because of their cool name.

Those gals can really play...regardless of who they choose to love.

For the modern players, I think Richard Marshall is at the top of his game.

Yes! What a lovely sound - dreamy, clear, cantabile, core, warmth!
I fully agree with you, no wholeheartedly ´cause she is conveying sentiments. And that tiny vibrato.....mmmm!

Favourite brass band cornet tone? David Dawes.

Favourite cornet tone? Maurice Murphy or Hans Gansch.
