When I found out that the great Phil Smith would be retiring from the New York Philharmonic at the end of this year, I was shocked. I stared, gaping at the computer screen with my mouth open for at least three minutes. He's just such a giant, who could possibly fill his shoes?
Does anybody have an idea of who is going to be a contender to fill in Phil Smith's spot, other than Matthew Muckey? |

As the great drum sounds each beat, old ones make way for the new. And so it goes.
We could not possibly have any clue as to who is going to audition, no less win, this audition. There are many fine players out there. They will find their person.
Same as when Bud retired from Chicago. _________________ -Glenn Roberts

The Philharmonic rarely promotes someone from the section.

The answer is simple. It's going to be Bigman obviously! _________________ You are what you practice. |

But not unprecedented if you consider Vacchiano, John Ware, maybe Phil himself (if co- counts as "section"). I would think it might be a more general tendency than a New York thing: the when-people-have-lived-with-ALL-your-warts-for-awhile syndrome? _________________ Most things are easier than you think, except believing that |

Muckey has been playing some principal this year. Maybe he will go for it. |

I've heard Phil Smith is not playing most of this season before retiring. If you haven't already heard him, you might be too late. _________________ Monette LTJ Bb

Why is Mr. Smith not playing "most of this season" if he's not yet retired? |

Phil Smith wasn't "from the section" of the Philharmonic. While his title was co-principal for the first 9 or 10 seasons he was the principal trumpet from day one. It was very strange to attend a concert without him there. When I heard the news of his retirement I couldn't sleep at night. Every day he inspires me. |

Matt is a great player, but so are lots of others out there. Quite uninformed to assume he alone is worthy. There are many fine players with jobs that might be interested, and many players none of us have heard of that can do the gig. Who knows? Maybe someone without a job will win the audition. Hey - it happened with Matt after all.
Phil is done playing with the philharmonic from what I understand.

1. Perhaps the most brutal and busy schedule of US orchestras (look at the schedule for next season on the website)
2. Several weeks of international touring every season
3. Filling the shoes of a legend
4. No pops shows
I would be shocked to find the New York Philharmonic hired a player without a current full-time job for the principal position. Shocked. I would be surprised if such a player was even invited to the audition.
I just do not see it happening. I don't mean to make it sound impossible. I applied, I don't expect to be invited as I don't have a full time job. But there is no way the NYP will hire someone who has zero experience for a principal position. If it happens, and the chances are so remote, but if it happens, I will eat crow. |

How rigorous is the screening? Are you guys thinking of letting younger, less experienced players audition or keeping it to players in full time gigs or something in between? |

The question begs:
Several previous posters have mentioned that Mr. Smith is not/has not been playing with the NYP this season. Who has been playing principal this season? Has it been Mr. Muckey for all weeks, or has the NYP brought in any guest principals?
Whoever it is, they sound great on the weekly broadcasts. |
