Has anyone else listened to Chicago's set of Mahler's symphonies (Solti conducting)? I bought it the other day and find myself irresistibly drawn to it...all the time. It's even starting to interrupt getting my work done for classes! I'm also wondering, since you guys seem to know all this obscure stuff, who was playing besides Herseth in the early 80's? I'm curious as to who's providing such great support on parts like the finale of 1, etc...

I used to own the Solti/CSO Mahler box set. In my opinion, it's the best full Mahler cycle out there- not that I have a CD collection filled with complete Mahler cycles.
The entire CSO sounds impressive on those recordings, especially the brass section. |

to answer your specific question, no, i've not heard them all. i like that 5 and dislike the 8..i prefer solti's older london sym cycle...but you can't go wrong with what you've got.
if you use your set as a reference point and branch out to different mahlerians you'll really enjoy it. i suggest:
sym 1 boulez/cso, bernstein/concertgebouw, leinsdorf/boston (early 60's)-someone really nails a bunch of ascending triplet 16ths at the very end on that..guess it's ghitala
sym 2 klemperer/philharmonia on emi (1964, i think, could be '62)
sym 3 horenstein/london
sym 4 walter/nypo
those are all probably piston trumpet recordings...try some central european groups to hear how the rotary valve guys sound...i think kubelik did all the mahlers w/bavarian radio symphony for dg in the '60s
have fun

The Vienna Mahler 5 is amazing. Also check out the recent San Francisco Mahler 2. Just amazing recordings.

The Concertgebouw recording of Mahler 5 under Chailly is really really good. That group gets such a great sound. When they are on, they are fabulous. _________________ Matt Cyr

Thoses CSO recordings are good, but my favorite Mahler 5 of all is New York Phil with Mehta. Say what you want about the opening (which is slower - Phil's own interpretation) but this recording can't be beat!

While I like Solti's work very much, I also find Boulez' Mahler with CSO very compelling. |
