Heralders
I wish advise in a Portable Multi track SD memory recorder, to record my trumpet Class, and record me in the following scenarios;
1. me and a friend playing duos using independent mics (Shure SM 57)
2. me and a Piano or keyboard same time and
3. me with a mp3 Play along.
I use a Tascam DR-05 for my trumpet class. Is very easy to use, compact, good price and sound, and SD convenience to move the mp3 to a computer.
What you use in this situations
Blessings
Felix

I have a Zoom H4n, it has two built in mics and inputs for two more.

There are newer Zoom recorders that are probably more capable.

The zoom's are a great choice for this as long as you use the H4 or higher

Hi Felix,
What are the shortcomings of using the Dr-05 in the scenarios you describe? Knowing that, I'm certain people here can help.
Thanks,
Mario

My interest its record me and another trumpet or piano player or mp3 in separate channels to master it.
I have seen that Zoom H4N is one of the best options. But I wish to be clear based in advises from colleagues that have do that with good results
Thanks
Felix

Hi Felix,
Would something like a Focusrite 2i2 USB audio interface work? You would use the interface to record with your microphones, into your laptop. If you want to have multiple tracks, it might be the way to go.
Regards,
Mario

Focusrite 2i2 will work, but only for two inputs maximum. It is powered by USB (hence, no need for a power adapter). You will get a pair of mono line outputs and a single stereo headphone jack. The 2i2 connects via USB 2.0. On the computer, use Audacity or Reaper, either of which is more functional than the included software.

Preamps will likely be a problem for piano - SM57 signal may be too weak. You may want to get a Cloudlifter ($150), Triton Audio FetHead ($100) or a Marti Audio Boost Barrel ($63) in-line preamp that is powered by phantom power (provided by 2i2) and amplifies one channel by extra 20-25 dB. If you get two of these in-line preamps, you will be good to record with either SM57 or with ribbon microphones.

Here is a review of Marti Audio Boost Barrel (but no audio).
