I have read past threads but didn't get much of a feel. What does anyone know or have heard about the Boston 3-Star Cornet? I know Doc has a modified one and Clarke had one too.

You mean the "Boston 3-star NE plus Ultra?" Absolutely, I've have a running search on ebay for my elusive 3-star in mint condition with a "buy it now" of $100. I'll probably end up getting a slightly used one and then fully restoring it. |

An 1892 Boston 3-Star sold on eBay on 11/03/03 for $600. Suspect it might have gone higher if the listing title had been a little more straight forward. Here's a link to the item:

Oops my bad, it went from $256 to $514 in less than 8 minutes.
You definitely can’t allow yourself to be lulled into a false sense of security with all the snipers on Ebay.

Hey ARB,
I am sure you meant that sniper comment as a compliment. Thank You
Actually, I have been waiting many months to find a Boston with the single piece leadpipe. I don't think they started making them until 1910, and this one is a 1910. This configuration is fairly rare, at least more so than the ones with the removeable lead pipes.
Here is a page from Usedbits web site where Tom Turner gives some information on the three star. Look at about the middle of the page. http://usedbits.cohenbrothers.org/cohenbrothers/doc_severinsen_horns.htm

Congrats on that great catch. I had totally forgotten about putting that horn on my watch list. The one piece leadpipe version is the same style as the one Doc has (his is gold plated with a bit more engraving). |

Congratulations Steve. The sniper comment was totally meant as a compliment, from one sniper to another. If I hadn’t recently picked up a late 70’s Yamaha 732 cornet I would have had that Boston on my hit list. Enjoy it and let us know how it plays.

THe Boston 3* ne plus ultra is a fine fine cornet. The best of its day, and still highly prized in good condition. I played on a pretty good one they had at Dillons last year. It was the best old cornet on the "wall". |
