Traditionally this would be the used selmer, but now we have new options like the Acb and Dillon pics.
Right now, what would be the best piccolo under $1000? Something ok to do weddings with and won't sabotage one's playing.

Used Getzen Eterna 4 valve. Frequently available on ebay for under 1k. Got mine for $575. Someone recently got one for under $500.

I got mine in like-new condition for $500. Great pic for the money.

Paid something like $475 new for mine way back in 1978 and have been playing it ever since. I've added a Blackburn A pipe a number of years back and love the horn even more.

It won't happen often but I saw a P5-4 for less than $700 on Craigslist not too long ago. At that kind of price I would make very sure there weren't provenance issues but books do get lucky once in a while.

I've noticed a few of your comments in the piccolo threads but don't remember if you've tried the Dillon. I'll be very interested in your take on this topic.

Hello,

I know from experience that the Solista piccolo plays surprising well. They run $600-700. It has has a gold brass bell with cornet receiver. George Rawlins tweaks each horn himself. His website is www.grawlin.com. It is worth checking out. Good Luck.

Cordially,

No, I have not. There are other who have, though.

What should also be checked out is his return policy.

"We do not accept returns of Instruments do [sic] to the amount of custom work done on each instrument prior to sale"

Killed any notion of my ever buying anything directly from him. Might try one for grins if I found it cheap on ebay when I know I can turn it around for about the same money.

+1

I also would like to see "right of return" become standard policy with used gear; at least here on the TH. Otherwise online sales should completely cease, because you have no idea what you might get unless you find it in person, usually meaning in a store.

Robert, you obviously don't understand what he's saying or why.

George does a lot of adjusting to a trumpet so that it plays how you tell him you want it to play. You don't pay for this service. If you play the horn and don't like it, the idea is that you tell him why not, send it back and he'll adjust it so that you will like it.
The no-returns policy is because if he spends four or 5 hours adjusting a horn for someone, and they change their mind for whatever reason, then he has to undo all of that work, losing even more time.

It's a value-added service that means you get a good playing trumpet. The trade off is that you don't get to return it if you change your mind, because then he would be operating for a loss and not able to have a business.

You know, do you want value or do you want security. As a consumer, you can't really have everything, and as a small business, he can't offer everything and still have a business.

He's not forcing anyone to buy his stuff. His returns policy is clearly listed...

I don't know what US import taxes are like, but you can get a Carol Picc for $1000ish if you buy it from these guys in Australia:

http://www.saxandwoodwind.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1528

They'll probably even subtract GST (10%) if it's being sent overseas.

Seems pretty unambiguous. He doesn't give refunds. Why? Because of how much work has gone into it prior to sale. Sounds to me like it's supposed to play right when you get it.

How many times are you going to pay for shipping both ways and his undefined "nominal fee" to tweak it further and how much time are you willing to invest in chasing your tail when the basis is a cheap Chinese sow's ear when you can have a decent horn from the beginning for the same money or less.

No thanks.

Robert, First you dug up a years-old thread simply to make a comment about his return policy. And then once again you've jumped in here with nothing to say except mention his return policy.

Why haven't we seen you raising such concerns about any of the other sellers that don't offer returns?

I mean, I highly doubt you can return a Monette trumpet...

Or, for example, if you order a custom Carol trumpet which the store doesn't routinely stock, most will not accept returns on it. This includes the big boys like Thomanns etc.

Most ebay sellers don't offer refunds, but people still buy and sell trumpets..

So why are you digging up threads and adding commentary about his return policy... when you claim you have never bought anything from him.
Why is it such a big deal to you? I don't get it.

Are you under the impression that I answer to you?

Let me immediately and thoroughly disabuse you of that notion sport.

Oh-ho-ho! And there's the teeth.

Notion sport,
what a tedious game.
I'd rather not play,
if it's all the same.
