Are you bringing a horn to ITG? Will it be with you at all times?

Is it safe to leave it in the hotel room (during the day) during the conference? What about if you leave the hotel to go to dinner?

Completely safe IMO... way safer than leaving it at a restaurant.

Best,

Says the man who sells horns.^^^^^^

But seriously, it's probably fine in the hotel. I might be a little nervous, though. I hate leaving it in the car.

If I know I have to leave it somewhere, then I usually bring the one I'd be less upset if it got stollen.

And a guy who has spent 1,000 nights + in hotels as a musician mind you...

I would NEVER leave a horn in a car. that's just asking for trouble.

Fairly safe. The biggest risk is when the room is open for cleaning service. Even then, the greater risk is that the maid might take a small item that could be hidden on the cleaning cart somewhere. So I wouldn't leave a Rolex lying around, for example. That's why hotels often provide those in-room safes. But a trumpet case is too big to be stashed on the cleaning cart. I just leave the case in the closet, and I've never had problems (knock on wood).

I agree with Trent 100%. Besides, who else would want the damn thing besides another trumpet player? And even then maybe not. Many years ago, while attending Washington University in St. Louis, I was taking lessons from one of the symphony players. He came to my lesson one day obviously upset about something. Turns out his house was broken into by some criminal. The good news though was that he/they didn't touch any of his dozen or so horns. Point is, criminals don't see a lot of value in a trumpet. Take it, lock it in your room and forget about it. It'll be fine.

Update: Another piece of good news for trumpet players is that trumpets are cheap. At least you're not lugging around a $500,000 dollar cello.

What if you are not staying in the hotel. Is it okay to just carry your horns around with you durning some of the day time events. I know when I went to NAMM they wouldn't let you bring horns in to the show areas. Is this the same....I was hoping that I can just lug it around with me and use it as a stool if needed. This is my first time at ITG and maybe some you you experienced people will know.

I want to know as well. I might not bring my horn everyday, but I will want to for a few days, and won't have a place to stash it other than my car.

I've attended more than a dozen of these conferences over the years. I've never known ITG not to allow trumpet players the option of lugging their horns around. Knock yourselves out. Otherwise, how are you going to try out all those mouthpieces without a horn?

Yes, take your horn with you to the conference. When I first bought my case it came with a web shoulder strap that I held in my hand and decided that I would never use so threw it away. After a few days at the conference I went to the vendors area to see if I could find a find a replacement strap as I now knew why it was included.
When I wasn't carrying the horn, it was on the stand in my room so I could see and admire it. You can also practice in your room during reasonable hours without interruption.

Of course you can carry your horn around with you. That's what people do at the trumpet conference.

See you there!
