RICE!!!!!! If I could go back in time, that would be my top choice!!
Barbara Butler and Charles Guyer were the trumpets teachers at EASTMAN and NORTHWESTERN. They have put out a huge percentage of the orchestral players currently gigging. In the places you want to go, find out if the teacher that you want to study with is available for freshmen. Most are only available for graduate and upperclassmen.
Also, what are you auditioning on?? What are you playing?? Do you have all major/minor scales down?? Do you have a piece that you can express yourself lyrically on?? The faculties are going to be overloaded with Haydn and Hummel auditions. If you can play something lyrically with expression, that will make you stand out. You want your audition to be memorable. They will hear tons of students playing stuff high, fast and loud. Full scholarships are tough to come by.
Select a school for your trumpet teacher. Find someone who is going to challenge and push you. Find somewhere that is going to give you alot of exposure to different types of music. There are great teachers out there who most have never heard of. Name recognition schools may get you to the audition as a pro, but it is HOW WELL you can play and adapt that will count.
Food for thought... _________________ Kanstul 1503 Bb

Peabody has an amazing ed program as all of its programs are, but it is a bit pricey to come here. Even so, they can give generous scholarships! And don’t forget Joe Burgstaller is incredible! _________________ Yamaha NYSII Artist Model Bb

Rice was my top choice for grad school. When I didn't get in, I saw the writing on the wall and changed careers.
Seriously...whatever you choose to do, choose the less-expensive option. You will live to regret anything else. _________________ Please join me as well at:

I ended up going to a school because it was what recommended by others, and in doing so passed on North Texas State (now UNT). Dropped out in the middle of my second semester, had a draft number of 13 and the rest is history. I have a friend who went to a major school with a super star trumpet prof. He dropped out after a year having never studied with the super star prof and was limited to performing in the big marching band. Only the top half dozen trumpets in the school had any chance of playing in another group--the school had guys who were specializing in classical performance and playing their C trumpet in that same marching band to get their performance credits. He transferred to a state school near his home, got to play lots of music, and became a really fine trumpet player.
Sometimes setting your sights a bit lower allows you to reach higher. _________________ Recording Olds Trumpet
