I thought that this information would be important to be linked in the Bill Adam forum. Mark Minasian submitted a post to the TPIN list last week about the Las Vegas Trumpet Fest. In the paragraph about the Saturday clinics (see the attached link), he mentions the John Harbaugh clinic on the physics of trumpet playing and in a clinic later in the day Charlie Davis mentioned a study that he participated in that came to a similar finding. I find this to be fascinating!

with his findings as we each do what works best for us to play the
horn. What he claimed was that neither the lips nor the mouthpiece
need to make a sound for the trumpet to play. He performed a
demonstration of taking a long glass cylinder and lowering one end over
the flame of a propane torch. The cylinder produced a tone caused by
the air currents around the flame. Nothing was producing a sound,
nothing was vibrating or buzzing, but, when the flame was inserted into
the cylinder, the energy of the flame disrupted the air in the column
and created the standing wave. Another interesting observation was that
you would hear the sound then, a fraction of a second later, see the
flame begin flickering wildly as the reflection of the wave disrupted
it. In a later clinic, trumpeter Charley Davis stated that he was part
of a study where a miniature camera was mounted within a mouthpiece to
record lip action. The activity observed with the flame could be seen
in Charley's lips. They never touched or buzzed and the vibrating of
the lips was a result of the standing wave generated within the horn.
John also spoke at length about isometric vs. kinesthetic muscle
responses and the importance of mental focus. |
