PostPosted: Mon Nov 28, 2016 4:28 pm    Post subject: Recovery Time from Spine Surgery Reply with quote

I'm having lumbar fusion surgery in January and today the surgeon said it will be a 5 hour operation with a 3 to 4 month rehab period.

I asked him how soon after the surgery I can start playing my horns again and he, basically, said "when it doesn't hurt too much to breathe the way you need to play."

Well, that didn't help much so I'm asking here if anyone has had spine surgery and can give me a ball park estimate on when I can get back on the horn.

I don't have an answer to your question about rehab and recovery time.

But sending you wishes of a successful surgery and speedy recovery!! I know they have this stuff down to routine procedures these days, and nothing to worry about!!

Heal fast and good luck buddy!

Thanks! I'm actually looking forward to the surgery -- or should I say the results of the surgery. It'll be good to be able to stand to take a solo again!

I had a microdiscectomy (less invasive than a fusion) in June, I ended up taking two weeks off the horn and was good to go. Good luck!

Jim, I had a TLIF at L4-L5 done in mid-Oct 2014. I had delayed for many years, and the surgery lasted about 5 hours. I had a GREAT ortho surgeon. Everyone heals differently but I was using my Warburton PETE 5 days after surgery, and began playing on day eight. I was back to gigging in early Dec. and was amazed that years of chronic pain was just gone. Good luck with yours, I hope it works as well as mine has!

Wow, that's outstanding, Ron! We trumpet players are a determined bunch. I had my right hip replaced in September, 2014, and was playing my horn in my hospital bed using a Yamaha Silent Brass set up two days after the surgery.

I'd like to think I'll come back as quickly this time as well but the fact that back muscles will be involved suggests I may have to hold off on shedding iat least 'til I get home.

The best part of all this is, if my experience is anything like Hunter's, when I get back on my feet I'll be the principal trumpet of a major symphony!

Hey Jim,

I had cervical spinal fusion early February 2014. I played a wedding late April that same year. Was I 100%? No, not even close. My doc made me wait nearly a year before I even started PT even though I was playing the whole time. The answer is there is no answer, it's very different for everyone. All I did was stop or back off whenever I felt uncomfortable. I'm at a place now where I'm 95%+ of where I was pre-surgery. My strongest advice for is to just be patient, you will heal. Don't get hung up on time tables and when you "should" be better, listen to your body and go from there. Good luck!

No useable info here from me, just wanted to wish you a successful surgery and a speedy recovery!
And don't forget to ask the doc, "Doctor, will I be able to play double C on trumpet after this surgery? Doc: "I don't see why not." Jim: "Great, I never could bef......" .....oh wait, you've heard this one?😉

Thanks, Brad! You gotta be a Rodney Dangerfield fan! (So I asked for a second opinion and he said "Your're ugly, too!")

Jim,

I spent 3-4 hours at one of your awesome trumpet hangs the day after my vasectomy, playing loud and high using proper compression. I had a blast, until the next morning and the day after that, and part of the day after that. I know this is too much information, but I wish you the best, along with plenty of recovery time before unboxing the horn.

Thanks for the thought, Mike. I remember that hang. I thought there was something amiss when you kept taking ice out of the beer cooler and holding it on your crotch.

Less than a week 'til my surgery. Got subs lined up for two months worth of trumpet rehearsals and gigs.

Meantime, I'm thinking there are a lot of generally unrecognized benefits to back surgery. The main one, of course, is eventually feeling better but there are some others as well.

For example:

1. No more snow shoveling for awhile
2. Airlines move you to the head of the line
3. Youll lose weight because you cant reach your snacks
4. You meet nice people when you move slower
5. You dont have to dance at weddings
6. You learn a lot more new words
7. With good meds hospitals can be fun
8. Orthopedic specialists are optimists
9. Hardware* takes on a whole new meaning
10. Law & Order re-runs

*The screws and rods they put in

I wish you the best Jim, a good successful surgery and a speedy recovery. If any of your subs fall through I'd be happy to fill in when available.

Cheers,

Best of luck, and I can tell you, you've got the right attitude! Humor, is the best medicine. And don't sweat it, they got this stuff so routine these, days, you'll be in and out, and in recovery mode before you know it.

I'll say a prayer for you, and for God to guide your doctor's very capable hands.
