|
|
I have an old Couesnon Flugel that did not come with the third valve trigger. After looking for a decent kit so I could add my own I decided there wasn't anything that quite matched the look I wanted so I gave making my own a go. Here is the progress so far, let me know if you have any suggestions for improvement (especially with adding a spring).

Hi
I had Charle Melk install a 3rd valve slide trigger on my Couesnon. It works very well but is no match for the rather elegant trigger pictured. Nice work.

I had my tech guy modify a Bach cornet 1st valve trigger for me to use with my Cuesnon flugle. A few careful measurements and cut down rod made it work very well in the vertical position. Still have the horn and use it many many years later.

Beautiful job!
Does the linkage prevent the trigger handle from slipping off the pivot or are you planning to add a screw? |

It stays on pretty well, but I will probably add a screw at some point. |

You could use a pre-tensioned elastic transparent cord mounted on the third slide brace and third slide bow. This may require soldering a little hook inside the bow ID to secure the bottom loop of the cord and allow easy removal of the bottom part of the slide, if needed. |

After using a rubber band for a while I decided to add a loop so no spring is needed. I forgot to take pictures the whole way but here are the few I have.

Hi Mike
Maybe I'm being stupid, but if I understand correctly from looking at your new photo and earlier photos before you added the ring, without a spring, your trigger mechanism has no return feature, and you basically via the use of the ring, manually extend the slide, by moving the ring towards you to extend the 3rd slide, and away from you to close the 3rd slide again.
If so and I understand correctly, you use this trigger in basically the same way that you would use a third slide ring on a trumpet, but in the opposite direction.
Is this how it works?
Whatever, it looks very nicely done, and you are obviously pretty skilled in this regard.
I really hope that it will work out very well for you.
Best wishes

Exactly, before I had used a rubber band to pull it back but now it functions manually just like a 3rd valve slide on a trumpet. Here is a picture with the rubber band.

Hi Mike
Thank you very much for the confirmation. Looks great! I really hope that it is working well for you.
Take care

Very nice work. I have had success taking the yamaha 631 trigger kit and modifying for other instruments. The kit comes with a replacement slide. The pull knob, which is silver soldered to the slide bow, is drilled and threaded to accept the action rod. I simply unsoldered the knob and installed it on the horn I was modifying.
My very 1st, when I was working at Schilke's, was made using an Olds third valve trigger mechanism, and fitting it to my Olds flugel. I had to solder a finger hook on top of the ring on the lever to lmake it work well. |

Very cool! I have had Charlie Melk fashion a couple different ways of doing this for me on two different flugels; one is the same as a trpt, the other has the wooden trigger that I suddenly realize I never looked at that closely but I'm sure must be spring loaded. I also had him install his pitch finder on a sweet old cornet. All work flawlessly.
If I could do work like you've pictured here, I would do all that stuff myself too. Beautifully done! |

Had this done years ago. The original trigger was nice but it was too low. I fabricated a crude lever. Works great.

I like it, it matches the horn's style quite well and looks a little rustic.

Well done! Is the spring wrapped around the main axle? |

Thanks.
Kinda The spring is a manufactured heavy duty spit valve type spring used for just this sort of thing. _________________ Schilke B5
