I'm a forced intermediate trumpet player, but a beginner at heart. I started in high school with only three months of practice. I've come far, now I'm in my second year in wind ensemble. I don't have a good foundation on phrasing and musicality. I'm looking for books that will help, but not childish nursery rhymes. Something that will progress slowly and not make me sound childish. Something old timey and musically interesting. |

Clarke's _Elementary Studies_ or, the Technical Studies done slowly. Or, both!
Really, any of the classics, done slowly and correctly with intentional phrasing and human attention to dynamics and phrasing and such, are musical and fun to play, and don't sound like nursery rhymes. Including but not limited to Arban, Schlossberg..
But, yeah, the Clarke Elementary Studies book has some pretty melodies in it in Bb concert for many pages, and then moves on to concert Eb (written in F), etc, etc. When I was going through the book, I'd pick one exercise (~12 bars or more) from each "lesson" (~4-6 exercises per lesson) and transpose it to all other major keys on separate paper, and play the same.
Good luck, play musically, rest in between tunes, and have fun! |

The books that I felt benefitted me the most, in the time before I ever had lessons, were the books by Allen Vizzutti.
https://www.amazon.com/Allen-Vizzutti-Trumpet-Method-Technical/dp/0739019414
Note that this is just the first of 3 different books. All are worth having.
These are not a progressive method per se, but a collection of exercises, that aren't very difficult but did a better job of rounding out my technique than any of the other books I had seen at the time. In later years I became a huge fan of other method and exercise books, but always with the guidance of a pro teacher. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

I think I need to expand.
Rubank Elementary. Harry James Trumpet Method. Holly Humphries Trumpet Method. Edwards-Hovey Book II.
There are plenty more.

I hope to own all of the Hering books some day. I think I have 1, 2, and the 40 progressive etudes.
Also, Arban's was written for adults, you could always go with that. _________________ Yamaha 8335LA with Blessing 3C, 5C, Schilke 11A4A |

Edwards-Hovey Method for Trumpet | These! And Getchell Bk 2 as you progress. These teach melody, key centers, style, patterns, both rhythmic and melodic sequences, dynamic contrast, tempi, and if one is willing to stretch him/herself, a lot of music can be made playing out of Getchell. It is also a good place to make the break from the 8 bar, single line method book exercises designed for the lowest common denominator (slowest kid) in the school lesson class. I use Getchell with 11 year olds, college students and every one in between. Good luck |

I actually used Getchell Book 2 in my practice last night. One of my college trumpet professors used it to introduce me to transposition. There are some fun melodies in there. _________________ --Matt--

I use Getchell Bk 2 all the time myself. I also should've mentioned the Art of Phrasing section in Arbans. Keep working on things that aren't really written on the page, those that come from within each individual. That's the power of music. |
