Also, thanks guys for giving clear answers about jazz education trends. My own observation in the classical world is that there are more and more exceptional young players every year at most schools with any kind administrative commitment and musical culture. It's also startling to go into a community without such a culture.

Unless we have a military band gig, steady touring work with a musical, circus, top name artist, or cruise ship job, we're all fighting for the same $50 gig (sometimes less) and being as well prepared I think is a good asset.


I agree. I think (especially undergrads) need to be prepared to do a variety of things while still focusing primarily on their passion. However, tell that to the majority of high school jazz aspirants who all want to be Ambrose or Avishai.
