Oh no!! I knew Mike was in the hospital but I didn't know how serious I guess, it was.
I started a Benge trumpet hunt a while ago, and Mike was super helpful. He always returned emails, and was willing to share info no matter how many questions I had.
Mike also shared so many cool stories about his road time with Buddy Rich and others, and knew just about every trumpeter in the industry.
I'm very sorry to hear of Mike's passing. Mike was a devoted man of God, and i hope he has gone to a much better place and found peace.
Very sad news indeed. |

What a great guy. We had a couple/three back and forths here on this site, and nice PMs about the late Bill Lamb. I always admired his work, and his dedication to preachin' the trpt gospel! RIP MM

Ditto. We had nice chats about Purviance mouthpieces. He sold me a custom rim made for Johnny Audino that didn't work out for him, but gave me a new lease on life.
I'm so sorry to hear about this. Great guy and fantastic player. |

Pancreatic cancer. Arrangements are scheduled for 2/18, according to his Facebook page. A really super trumpeter, and better person. We discussed our beliefs as much as trumpet, and I am far better for having known Mike. _________________ Dr. Albert L. Lilly, III DM

Thanks for sharing details about the arrangements.
Cancer is a mean, terribly slow killer. I've lost many friends and family to cancer as I'm sure we all have. With all of our science, technology, investments and research, I am so equally frustrated and flabbergasted at the fact we can't find a cure. I know there have been advancements, but one of those geniuses at NIH should have this figured out by now.
I'm grateful to have known Mike, even though only briefly. Full of knowledge, great musicianship, man of faith, and a hell of a nice guy. Very sad. |

I have the total list of arrangements, but was not sure about sharing them publicly. If you want them, drop me a PM... _________________ Dr. Albert L. Lilly, III DM

Very sorry to hear of this. He was very inspiring and cool to be around in my early days in NYC. Last time I spoke to him a few months ago he didn't even mention being ill and was very enthusiastic in general . A great musician and person. I will miss him very much. |

Michael was one of those I respected the most of all the folks I've met through the Trumpet Herald. We were all blessed by his presence here (whether we agreed with him or not on particular subjects).
He was truly one of the great Old-School players and he shared so much GREAT wisdom freely with us.
Thank you Michael John McGovern. Truly you were the mcgovnor!
Sincerely,

I went to Mannes with Mike. We hung out a lot. Mike and I lost touch the last few years. When I heard he was ill I spoke to him 2 weeks ago. He told me that they were just trying to manage his pain.
I'm very, very sorry to hear of his passing. Mike was an old fashioned bebop player (his words) but I remember him playing principal on Bruckner Symphony #3. He did an excellent job. An all around great musician. He could take 4 part dictation in his sleep.
My condolences to everyone who knew Mike. He was a spiritual, gifted, humble man.

I only knew Mike from TH. Now that he's gone and I did some reading about him, I'm sorry I didn't make an effort to get to know him better.
So now Gabriel has another bebopper in the trumpet section.
