I was just watching this video, and at about 1:12 the camera zooms in on his chops for quite a while.

I'm sure you Reinhardt experts will be able to tell what type he is.

Just curious!

My guess is a IIIA . . . fairly high placement and at about the 1:00 mark he appeared to push up slightly to ascend. I only watched it once. Maybe I ought to watch it again. My first impression, though, is a IIIA.

From his high placement and horizontal horn he looks like a 3A but he doesn't have much embouchure movement and in the following and other clips he seems to pivot to the lower notes like a 3B. He might have a mixed pivot and there are some out there that can get away with it. He's quite a player no doubt.

Possibly one of the most frustrating videos to watch . . . every time you could have seen it they pulled way back, and most of the time when they zoomed way in there was pretty much nothing going on to tip us off.

I'm going to stick with my first impression of IIIA, though.

And yes, he sounds amazing! I wish they had shown his chops close up for the whole thing. Then there would probably be much less speculating going on around here!

Ole's always been so humble, I never realized he was such a good player! Following the 'related links' it comes to a bunch of sheet music that scrolls along as it's played. Great sight reading material ...

I would agree with Rich's assessment.

I watched it for less than one minute. The guy is a stone cold 3A.

Here are the clues......

1- consider the type of player he is . VERY VERY flexible, lots of virtuoso trumpet and cornet playing. 3A's are usually very good at this and gravitate toward it.

2- without even seeing the pivot, the 3A has a certain "flat look to the lower lip and chin that you don't see in the 3B. The 3B would have a more pronounced lower lip roll. And the chin wouldn't be quite so runway flat.

3- If you look in on the close ups you can clearly see the muscular tension pushing up "slightly" toward the nose when he jumps intervals.

4- Hes got a sound that leans toward the 3A sound. Bright, light and very flexible.

Open and shut case my friends....
