I've just acquired an A4 that plays great. The valves have some plating wear. How long can I expect these valves to last and what kind of valves are they ? Thx

According to the ACB site, the valves are stainless steel.

I am almost certain that is not valve wear but just a chemical reaction from the bronze block to the stainless valve. Purchase some Wright's copper cream and apply lightly to the piston rubbing a darker spot. Using a soft cotton or microfiber cloth works best.

After cleaning be sure to wash the valve thoroughly before re-inserting back into the instrument.

Feel free to email us any pics or questions to info@austincustombrass.com

Welcome to the Adams family!

Thank you for your response. Are there stainless steel valves long lasting? It's the finest horn I've played.

Absolutely. The reason most folks use Monel is that they tend to not wear out "as often" due to neglect. I personally love the feel of the Adams and the Getzen blocks which are both not Monel. The feel of the stainless Adams Blocks are incredible!

Be sure to use a good quality lubricant. I prefer LaTromba T2 on my Adams blocks personally although Hetman and Monster are both great choices.

Best,
T

Awful.

I do believe so all made at Adams post the purchase of the company yes. I'm not 100% certain that they didn't make some monel pistons in the past for other makers.

A few reasons:

1. It stinks (smells like Kerosene which it basically is)
2. It evaporates super quickly and leaves a coating of wax (basically) on the valves... over the course of time that builds up slowing down valves (ymmv but that is our shop experience cleaning hundreds of horns that have used that on their pistons)
3. Did I mention the smell?
4. It stains EVERYTHING
5. it reeks

There ya go.
