Praise the Lord and pass the loot!!
Church gigs are the best. Obviously for Christmas, Midnight masses, Easter gigs, solo work on Sundays with organists, and talk about referrals for weddings! And Churches seem to always pay on time!!
Also, there are always events, bingo nights, parties, family reunions, and a non stop congregation of folks to talk and network with.
Black Churches have many more party style events where they seem to always have live music and lean towards having more jazz than white churches. Latin Churches also like to party and have live music at there events.
And maybe get yourself on the Church bulletin boards, or mailers, or websites is also a home run. One of the best places to find young couples getting married, and need music for receptions. |

Yeah, it's a whole new world - musically, commercially, politically, and more.
I started out working for newspapers. Remember them? Then I went to work in TV news. Remember that? It was what most people got their news from before Facebook, which is now the leading provider of news to Americans. There's a thought that'll wreck your breakfast.
Musically, I started playing as a kid in 1952. Got sidetracked by life and have been only an intermittent player since then. Became a serious comebacker a few years ago. Still love to play the old stuff and that's undoubtedly at the root of our booking problems.
All summed up by a reply I got from the DJ at an event my wife and I stumbled into recently. "Got any Glenn Miller," asked. "Nah, he doesn't work here any more," was the answer.
At least the booze was good. _________________ Jim Hatfield

My pianist and I get semi-regular work playing cocktail hours either before or after the wedding service. 2-3 hours of work pays us $300-$500 cash, and we charge extra if we have to drive and/or bring gear. We also always negotiate food and cocktails into the mix too. It's a good side hustle. Because it's just the two of us, it's affordable for them and still plenty lucrative for us. _________________ Yamaha 8310Z trumpet

About 300 swing classics and jazz standards. Lot of vocals from the Great American Songbook. _________________ Jim Hatfield
