Congrats to Colburn alumni Hunter Eberly for winning a trial week with the orchestra. Way to go, Hunter! Also congrats to Hayato Tanaka for playing his way into the finals.

Update - after much deliberation, Hunter has elected to remove himself from consideration prior to his trial week.

Wow. Congrats to Hunter. I'm sure he has a great reason.

I hope so, too, though that was never the point. He did not take the audition for leverage.

What's going on with this? Earlier this week there were a couple posts here about Bob Sullivan returning to his old job in Cincinnati after a special audition. This doesn't seem fair to Hunter, but I also worry about those kids at NWU...

If an orchestra knows who they want for a position, it is actually fairer to either just hire the person, instead of going through the audition process, wasting everybody's time and money, and then hiring the person they were going to hire anyway. It is when an orchestra is actually looking for somebody that a good player has a chance of getting the job.

They'll have to. But it's certainly disingenuous to incoming students who have to finalize their admission decisions by May 1st.

I feel worse for the hundreds of people who bought plane tickets and hotel rooms, took time off work and rearranged their schedules, and had to mortgage time from their families, on the good faith that they were getting a fair shake...

I don't think Cincinnati heard anywhere near 100 players for this audition. They were rejecting many great players based on resume.

Didn't they schedule one day for the audition?

I'm curious if Robert Sullivan subbed as guest principal with the Chicago Symphony this past year.
