I'm in New York City this week with my family and treating myself to great music! La Traviata at the Met on Tuesday was filled with great highlights, especially from Violetta, but the one thing that grabbed me was unexpected. The orchestration of the opera is mostly strings, winds, and voices, but there is one brief brass chorale in the third act that, after 2 hours on non-brass sounds, just accentuates how magnificent the Met brass section is! Wow! What a beautiful moment! David and Peter sounded great!

Yesterday I attended the all John Adams show at the New York Philharmonic and John Adams was there to introduce both of his pieces and enjoy his 70th birthday. "Absolute Jest" featured the NYP string quartet and was fragments from 3 Beethoven string quartets set to really cool orchestration. Matt Muckey and Thomas Smith did an excellent job with their parts. The second half was beyond compare with Harmonielehre! With a full brass section (2 tubas) this piece was simply amazing. The solo horn was brilliant and Chris Martin's solo in the second movement shimmered over the top of the orchestra. The finale was some of the most demanding playing I've ever heard and the brass made it sound effortless. Bravo to the entire brass section!! If you are in NYC today or tomorrow this Adams show is worth checking out!

And my lesson with David Krauss on Monday has my mind spinning with ways to explore more resonance in my sound! Just getting to experience his sound up close has cranked up my motivation meter! I will write on this topic in more detail next week.

That sounds like a great trip/concert tour. And a lesson with David Krauss too--that's fantastic.

Mr. Krauss gave a masterclass and concert performance (Song to the Moon from Rusalka and the Haydn tpt concerto) at the Southeast Trumpet Festival this past January. What a great sound and musicianship! I'd like to read about your lesson with him when you get a chance.

Awesome stuff - that's how you do NYC right! (Looking forward to a similar cultural bender when I go to Paris next month.)

I've enjoyed your lesson write-ups in the past. Thanks for taking the time to do them, and I'm looking forward to your next one.

Cheers.
