Does anyone know what cornet and mouthpiece Ruby Braff played? I just can't get enough of this guy.

Thanks in advance,
- Mike Combopiano

Early (50s): Besson trumpet, Zottola mouthpiece

60s: French Besson short cornet

Later: Benge 3z cornet, Wick 5 mouthpiece

He also played a Bach cornet at one point.

To understand his sound concept, listen to this:

Ruby Braff is one of my idols. Having listened to so much of his recordings and tried to match the sound, of course never getting there, I've wondered about the mouthpiece he used. Wick 5. I have a Wick 5 and 5B. Did he really use the 5? Or was it the 5B? Ruby was quite a small guy. The Wick is very small. Somewhere there must be someone who played with him or someone who took custody of the equipment after he died.

I was just listening the one of his albums this week. The depth of sound is amazing. The surety and also the flexibility. Just amazing.

There is also a nice Marian McPartland Piano Jazz episode with Ruby.

He talks about his equipment at the end of this article:

Jon-Erik Kellso knew Ruby well and may be able to provide some info.

Thanks for the link. I've read other interviews but missed that one. What a character.
