Do horns come out of the tank pretty much done - i.e. with that glossy silver finish?

Depends on the plater. From Anderson, I've played my own horns without color buffing and they look great. It's why I use them.

Can you clarify the above? Color buffing?

When an instrument comes back from plating, there sometimes are imperfections that need to be smoothed. There can be clouding as well. Color buffing is using a soft buffing wheel and jeweler's rouge to achieve a high finish, like a new instrument.

Color buff should be done before plating. It is the last stage before cleaning and plating.

Battle of the conflicting explanations!

color buff means buff with rouge (red)buffing compound.

New silver plating should look great. If it doesn't it means there was a problem like bad cleaning before plating, or pollution in the tank. Lots of things can go wrong. Sometimes if there is a problem, you can buff the silver and it will remove the problem, but that is only if the problem is on top of the silver. Usually that means oxidization, andcoudy-ness is an example of oxidization. If that happens, then the silver that remains after buffing is thinner by some amount.

Bottom line is that you should not need to polish to make it look better. But polish with silver polish does coat it with some sort of tarnish preventative with also feels better to the touch. SO yes polish brand new plate, but not to make it look better.

What goes in the tank, comes out. A good color buff shouldn't need a buff after. It is only a few molecules thick and even a quick buff could cut through the silver.

Been there done that.

Hasn't been my experience, but that's OK, everyone has different experiences. Also been there and done that.

I got a sample of plated brass from a place that sells chemicals to do alkaline silver plate. When I got it the sample had a satin texture. I got it to buff to a mirror shine with a few passes of Wright's silver cream but I wondered how brass instruments coming out of a plating tank look.
