Hi, I just bought a second hand Miraphone rotary flugelhorn, nice horn but a flugelhorn mouthpiece will not fit. It needs a German shank and my question is: is that the same as a trumpetshank? I play it now with my Yamaha 14F4 flugel mp with a Bob Reeves flugel-to-trumpet adapter and that fits quite well. Also my normal Warburton trumpetshank fits quite well.
Is it better to use a real flugel mp with a German (10 mm) shank or is the trumpetshank OK?

The shank size (10mm) is the same on trumpet mp and german flugel mp.
If the intonation is ok and you can produce the sound you want to, than all solutions are capable:
Trumpet mouthpiece
German flugel mouthpiece
American flugel mouthpiece + adapter

Warburton offers a flugel mp with german shank in three differnt cups. The smallest works well with easy high notes.

I had always troubles on intonation with the adapter.

Insider tip: try a Curry TC. Great sound and easy playing on the rotary flugel. Or for a more mellow sound, the Curry TF.

I ordered a Bruno Tilz S5 mouthpiece for this flugel (in Germany at Musik Produktive) with German shank.
The intonation is a little problematic with a trumpet mp and also wth the adapter. The best result I got with my Kanstul M-B4S Monette copy probably because it fits quite deep in the receiver.
My Yamaha 14F4 and Wick 4FL make this horn too dark so I ordered a mp with a medium deep cup.

I had big intonation problems playing my Weltklang rotary flugel with my trumpet 1 1/2C bach mouthpiece. I recently got a JK FL 1 1/2C mouthpiece with german shank for Thomann. It helped a lot with the intonation. The JK mouthpiece is quite shorter in length. If you don't have issues I guess it's fine to use a trumpet shank mouthpiece.
