Not a household name and one of the most underrated cats ever. Here he is teamed with Harold Land on a full album, The Remarkable Carmell Jones. Remarkable indeed.

When he moved to Berlin in the sixties the people who knew how well he played missed hearing him. I don't know what his status is today.

Carmel was playing in the big band that was involved with the disastrous walkway collapse at the Kansas City Hyatt Regency in 1981. KC friends told me that he was forever effected by PTSD from what he witnessed that day.
He was a GREAT player. I loved him with Horace Silver and cut my teeth on a record of his own on Prestige called "Jayhawk Talk." _________________ Bach trumpet artist-clinician

I picked up a 2CD set of him with Harold Land (includes The Remarkable Carmell Jones and some other albums) a few years back and wholeheartedly agree. Good stuff. Land is also on an album (Harold Land The Fox) from around the same time with Dupree Bolton, another one of my favorite trumpet players. |

Love him. I first heard him with an Oliver Nelson recording (In Berlin?) and have dug him ever since. Loved his work with Harold Land. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

You should check out "Jay Hawk Talk" also a very nice session with Jimmy Heath. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ru7Vx2XGgOw a very soulful player. he was on the Horace Silver recording "Song for my Father" also!
"Carmel Jones, best known for his work with various West Coast groups, is right at home in this hardcore "New York" band. Crisp and lyrical, with plenty of heat. He especially shines on The Natives Are Restless Tonight"

Regrettably, I had never heard of Carmell Jones until hearing "Hip Trolley" on the radio a few years back.
Like king leopardi, I recommend "The Remarkable Carmen Jones/Business Meetin'" twofer on Fresh Sounds records or, if you can find it at a good price, the excellent Mosaic box set. |

Carmell stayed at my apartment in Chicago for a few weeks, back in the late 1980's. He was considering a move to Chicago, and wanted to check out the scene. I was happy to help show him around and introduce him to many players.
He seemed to enjoy the community and was, of course, very warmly welcomed, but ultimately decided to stay in Kansas City. I'm grateful that I had this opportunity to connect with him. He was a really warm and kind person. _________________ Brad Goode

I got to know Carmell Jones in Kansas City in the late 80s and he had been one of my trumpet idols when I started playing jazz in the mid 60s. He was one of the most creative soloists I ever heard, but more importantly he was a true gentleman. My favorite recording of his playing is on the Gerald Wilson Orchestra album/CD "Portraits."
