Has anyone used this product? I have many cornets and trumpets without 1st slide thumb hook. Thought this may be a good alternative to installing new thumb hooks on them. _________________ Jupiter 520 M shepherds crook

I'd be careful about adding anything to a horn; I've come to believe that adding something to a horn not designed for it might or might not affect the way it plays....and not necessarily in a way you will like. And if you're referring to the Kelly product, I don't see the point at all, plus the one I saw is for the right thumb, which makes little sense to me. It's a big block of plastic clamped to the leadpipe. Easy to remove though.....and it also removes about 30.00 from your wallet.
I somewhat recently acquired a '74 Getzen Severinsen with nothing on the first slide, at first (for about 15 minutes!) it felt a bit odd, but now I don't miss it at all, I actually like the feel and the simplicity.

If you are referring to Kelly ThumbRest. it cannot replace the first slide hook as it is attached to leadpipe:

That's the one I saw; looks to me like an idea on about the same level as the "Warm-a-horn."
It almost seems like maybe the OP uses his RIGHT thumb in a first slide saddle.
A huge chunk of plastic clamped to the leadpipe?? Not for me.

Here's how it works. You come up with some sort of gizmo, usually made out of brass, but occasionally plastic, then you convince trumpet players that it's the missing link in their search for perfecting their playing. You sell it for a price roughly 5-10 times what it costs to manufacture, then you sit back and laugh as the desperate hordes place orders. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |
