Does anyone know of a great trumpet teacher that could give me lessons via Skype. I'm looking for a teacher specializing in chops specifically! I wanna get back to the fundamentals so that I can play with that effortless, efficient manner that we all so desperately seek Lol! Thanks.

I like Google. It got me here: http://www.trumpetherald.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1365360 Some of the links are dead, but most work.
If you put "site:www.trumpetherald.com" at the front of a Google search, it will only search this site.
I find it works better than this site's search function.

I just took a skype lesson from Jim Manley.
I was intrigued by his youtube discussions of air, chops, ease and efficiency, but wow!
During my lesson today, Jim discussed a concept, demonstrated the technique and explained how to do it. Then I demonstrated the technique back to him. He would make corrections as needed, answer my questions, made sure I was in sync and then move on to the next concept.
The frequent play-tests gave me confidence that his direction works and that I can make it happen.
Everything I played was immediately much, much easier and much more resonant following his direction. I played from pedals up to "High C" from p to ff with an ease I had not believed possible.
There were three main parts or concepts to the lesson. He took all the time necessary to ensure I experienced and understood each part of his method.
Immediately after the lesson he sent me the exercises in pdf along with youtube links to him playing the exercises. He offered a free follow up to me and wants to hear from me by email as to my progress.
The single best lesson I've ever experienced.
I will follow his directions assiduously and report back in a few weeks. _________________ searching |

On May 10th I had a no-charge follow-up with Jim (45 min.!!!) and a second full
lesson on July 1st.
The May 10th session addressed the difficulties I was experiencing doing the
exercises Jim had assigned me. I was very frustrated with my attempts, but
Jim's patience and experience helped me find a way ahead.
Most importantly, the application of his approach made my playing better
from day one of the first lesson, regardless of my practice stumbles.
The July 1st. lesson reviewed and refined the material of the previous
sessions and added new exercises. As before, Jim explained and
demonstrated each exercise, the reasoning of it, and where it would take
me. He checked my understanding of each element verbally and through
my playing.
Results: First lesson, April 3rd. Immediate feeling of much less effort overall,
increasing endurance, richer sound and quicker response. At a gig, about
two weeks later, the improvement and increase in sound was noted by
others in the section and yet my effort was halved.
To date I feel much more relaxed in the face and in the body. There is
never a feeling of tension in the throat or pressure in the head. My range
is better and ease of playing has greatly improved .
Bottom line: Enthusiastic and confident that it's only getting better!
Check out Jim Manley! _________________ searching |

Bill Carmichael, aka Screamin' Bill, has been a huge help to me. He has some videos on YouTube, I think. |

Nice page Russell. I recently started taking Skype lessons and wished I had found that list when I was looking.
I'm now taking lessons with Charlie Porter, mainly because I really liked his embouchure videos. So far I have had two lessons and it has been really eye-opening. I was having problems with endurance and range, and he gave me some simple exercises (not particular passages, things like free buzzing, very quiet playing, etc) which I worked on. At first I lost range but it was because I was using the wrong muscles and needed to build up the right ones. His exercises force you to focus on getting the right muscles involved. It has been about a month now and my endurance is about triple what it was before the lessons, and I finally can play passages in the A-Bb-B range above the staff with little effort. My goal at this point is to be able to consistently play up to high C with ease so I can stop being distracted by the high notes in a piece, and I am optimistic I will be there soon. I am generally able to play more lyrically in any range, there are less hiccups to get the notes out.
He charges $45 per hour which is around half compared to the more well-established people. The only problem I had was scheduling, he missed one lesson when traveling and it was hard to make up since he was at a summer camp. _________________ Thane Standard Large Bb / Monette Unity B6-7M mpc
