I needed a new cup for a musical gig I played recently and a lot of the guys in the pit worked at the local music shop. They said they would look for a used mute for me at the shop and they found one.

It happened to be a vintage Ray Robinson cup mute! and I got it for only $15!
Its in pretty good shape it needs to be cleaned a little and the sticker and paint is faded. All the corks are intact.
I used it today and it sounds fantastic I love it

Heres my question how do I know how old the mute is?

Bargain of a lifetime. They often go for well over $100 even in fairly bad condition. I think there was a thread somewhere on some differences in their production over time, such as the existence or absence of three little 'tab' like extensions to the cup rim where it approaches the bell flare when put in. I don't remember the exact details and can't find it now, but somebody may be able to answer. I'm certain Roger Ingram knows, because I've seen him comment on it before somewhere, perhaps here or somewhere else.

If you post a pic I can tell you how old it is. They changed a bit through the years.

Bargain!!!! I have one from thr 30's and had it restored by Roger Ingram, mutemeister. I love it! The older 30's ones have the felt lining rather than the flocking which indicates it is from the 50's (?). Yes, send a pic please. If all else fails, send pictures to mute Meister.
