I haven't listen to this album in years:

Those Hank Levy odd meter tunes are so much fun. I remember tripping over them on "Time for a Change" in college.
I'd love to have another crack at it now that I finally learned to count past four!!
What a band!! |

Thanks for posting. I loved playing that chart, too. "Send In the Clowns" is My favorite chart on this album, although I can't really say why. The whole album is good. _________________ I wish I was as good as I thought I was !!!

Heck yeah. Send in the Clowns is awesome. I love that trumpeters full compact powerful sound!
There used to be a live video with Jay Sollenberger playing the solo on YouTube., unfortunately it seemed to have disappeared however. |

I have most of the charts from this album, but my band won't even try some of them. The Levy charts are just too difficult to do without rehearsal. Some day... |

Even the Levy Alumni band at Towson, Maryland has a tough time with those charts, and they do them all the time. That Kenton's band at that time made them sound so smooth is a testament to how awesome those players were.
I have a CD of the US Army Jazz Ambassadors doing a bunch of those Levy charts, and they had Hank in the studio with them when they recorded them because they wanted his input on just how those charts should sound. Some of them are quite different - "Time for a Change," for example, is much more relaxed and a good bit slower - that's how Hank though it should be played. (I still prefer the high-charged energy of the "76" version, but that's just me.)
The Kenton "76" album is in my top 3 favorite big band albums and has been since I was introduced to it in 1986. _________________ Patrick Gleason

John Harner plays the high note solo and he lives and teaches up near Dayton, Ohio I believe. I was into all of the Kenton albums featuring Tim Hagans. Also really liked " Live in Europe" ... " Birthday in Britain" and " Plays Chicago." _________________ Schilke X3 Bb trumpet

My friend Greg played with both the Kenton and Levy bands, and has a bunch of them, but has trouble finding a band that can handle them.
But when they do come together, they are GREAT. |

I play in a band that might be able to handle "Time for a Change". Anybody know where I can find a copy? It's always been one of my favorites. |

I forget how "Time for a Change" is written.
Does it alternate back and forth from 4/4 to 5/4 every bar, or is it written in 9/4?
Listen to this album several times over the last few days, and just love these arrangements, the band is so tight, raw and groovy. |

It's in 9/4 2+2+3+2
