Finger hook on the leadpipe is missing. And it's had a lot of "repair work" done to it, leaving solder all over the place. Valves are very worn, will need refitting to reveal its true potential. Sorta like a "contractor's special."
It is a desirable model, just needs lots of work. _________________ "Strive for tone." -John Coppola

36 minutes to go and the trumpet is bid at $1,632.00 US! That is one expensive project horn. I've been told that some Super Recordings are rare, in terms of the configuration. Maybe this is one of them? Or maybe it's the Gold Rush. _________________ "Strive for tone." -John Coppola

I see why this is attracting attention.

This is an old arrangement, with the tuning slide/3rd slide swapped over, as was common in the old days. Well, maybe it's worth it to some collector. _________________ "Strive for tone." -John Coppola

$2,500 + $45 shipping, final price at auction. So, with a good overhaul and valve refitting, you're talking at least $4k.
A mere bag of shells. _________________ "Strive for tone." -John Coppola

This SR is NOT original, a mere mesh of different parts from other olds horns, the only thing original is the valve block and the bell.
This went for 2500 plus shipping. Wow. |

It's interesting that the old design of this trumpet was returned to by Olds before they went out of business in the 1970's. The "Pinto" model, which was one of the first modular trumpets, had the swapped-over tuning-3rd slide arrangement. I think there may have been another late model that followed the same pattern. _________________ "Strive for tone." -John Coppola

On the other site, was a heavy discussion by an Olds expert, he said it was a franken-horn with multiple bits of parts from Olds Super Recording, Ambassador, Super and etc.

Dunno, ebay sales are untrustworthy, however, the tuning slide/ 3rd slide arrangement is rare for an Olds. Those ports can't just have tubing switched to achieve that. And there HAS been lots of sloppy solder work done all over the horn.
This sort of thing is interesting to look at, but I'd have to have a lot of confidence in the seller before plunking down even half the sales price. I like to see them come out of estate sales with no work done to them - that's a lot harder to find. _________________ "Strive for tone." -John Coppola

Offset valves and 3rd valve trigger scream at me that not even the valve block is Super Recording. Recording, not that there's anything wrong with that. Except malicious deception on the part of the seller. Or ignorance? Either way the sales price constitutes unjust enrichment, a legal concept recognized by our Courts. I would hope E-Bay's guarantees would cover this.
None of that necessarily makes it a bad horn, but it has no collector's value. It's a SR bell, best used as a replacement part for a SR that needs it. Who knows what it has for a leadpipe? |
