So I got my magnificent Couesnon picc by the post today. I put a 7E mouthpiece in the Bb shank and then I had a blow for a minute. When I tried to remove it, it won't even budge.

I put hot water from the tap and gave it twist. Didn't move.

On the other hand, the A shank is fine. (none got stuck there......)

Any DIY suggestions?

Ferree's sells a thing called "Corrosion Cracker", a sort of penetrating oil ... that might help. I'm considering getting some myself, for science.

That must be the fastest corrosion ever.

But the leadpipe is removeable so you can take it out, find some tube that fits close in, put a plastic or rubber ring in between (or a piece of wood) and tap the mp out, carefully of course.

I thought about that. Just need that 'tube' that fits. Let go through my jumble of mess.

Even a PVC tube will fit the job

mouthpiece puller tool.. buy one..

Visit the repair tech. or your local H.S. / M.S. band, I'm betting the band director has one.

It's probably not corrosion. And you're apt to do more damage trying to figure out a way to DIY it...

It needs to be pulled, straight out, not twisted. The pullers do this better than anything else. I'd not try to knock it out from the inside. And it only needs to move a half a thou or less.

Try it with cold water not hot.

When I've had this happen I also just put the leadpipe in the refrigerator or freezer overnight and in the morning the mouthpiece was able to be pulled by hand.

This is all in the absence of the availability of a repair shop pro with a mouthpiece puller tool.

I've had success with this DIY method, as well - remove the piccolo leadpipe, take a small glass with ice water covering mostly the mouthpiece (no need to fill it all the way up to chill the leadpipe!) wait a little while, come back and pull the mpc straight out.

It should also be noted - Use a mouthpiece brush on your receiver regularly. Green stuff, and other fun organic matter like to hang out and take up space right there, and the tolerances should be optimized to the nearest .001" or less. It's easy enough to do - keep the brush in your case so it is always staring at you, and make the investment of a few seconds gentle scrubbing every week. You'd be amazed how infrequently stuck mouthpieces happen once this regimen in implemented.

Best,

-DB

You could take it to the nearest United Airlines counter to have it removed.

Just take the leadpipe out and put a chopstick in from the open end, set it into the backbore and tap it with a hammer.

Hold the leadpipe, mouthpiece down, over a cushion or something else soft that will protect the mouthpiece when it falls out. Then tap the leadpipe at the mouthpiece receiver pretty firmly with something wooden -- the handle of a mallet or something like that. Quite often this will get it to release. If it won't... mouthpiece puller or tech.

Put the leadpipe in a vise, grab the mouthpiece with a pipe wrench, and give it a good hard twist. Put your full weight into it.

Vises and pipe wrenches should never be used to extract a mouthpiece. Two pairs of Vise-Grip locking pliers are preferred. Vise-Grip, the wrong tool for EVERY job!

How do you expect the young uns to learn?
