In the case that the parts are public domain, I suggest checking out imslp.org

If they are not public domain, then I don't really know.

I was also curious about this a little while back. However, it seems most parts are not yet public domain for some reason. If you really want them and were prepared to buy a CD with the parts, you could always get them from Kalmus Editions.

There are many operas which are worthwhile getting parts for, if only for study / practice purposes. Most of us won't get a change to play Turandot, Meistersinger, Otello or Peter Grimes. If they are not on IMSLP, you need to get to know a librarian in an opera orchestra...

Way back, when Iwas playing casually in our opera company, I would get copies of the trumpet (and cornet) parts. Very handy for learning the show, even if only playing off stage parts. And the night you need to wander in and 'sight read' Otello! Which got me started on doing this!

There are also many operas you just don't need to worry about too much, so pick and choose with care. The 4 above, Aida, La Boheme, Cav/Pag, Lohngrin, Carmen, Wozzeck and all of Britten's operas are a good start for this year!

cheers

Andy

Most good excerpt books have many opera parts. Kalmus has folders of parts from many operas. They are complete parts, but only from public domain operas, of which, most are.
