Expecting a record crowd today, 4-23-17, for the Hang, 1-5 PM, at 243 Forest in Glen Ellyn.

Gorgeous weather!

Just talked with Zack Hall who's with a carload of players driving up from St. Louis and they're stoked for a very loud time.

Also spoke last night with one of Andy Machese's sons who said he's going to bring his dad by. Andy is the 95-year old phenom who still plays, still teaches, and still gigs after a career in which he was on the road with Jack Teagarden in the 40s, played first trumpet with an after-hours band that spelled Tommy Dorsey and Frank Sinatra after midnight at a resort in Virgina Beach.

Andy also played in the house band at the Chez Paree in Chicago and recalls playing for Sinatra many times.

Andy has four Martin Committes but says he likes his Holton better.

Hope you get a chance to meet him today!

The Hang was a huge success! Lot of players, lot of horns, lot of sound and a lot of fun!

The youngest was a sixth grader who dropped in with his mom to exchange a mouthpiece he'd bought from one of the attendees. (Kid is starting his safari pretty young!)

The oldest was 94-year old Andy Marchese who brought two Martin Committees and proved he knows how to play them - whatta guy!

The farthest to travel was the trio from St. Louis.

The most impressed was the Tribune reporter and her photog who said they're never heard so many trumpet players in one place before. They said the story is likely to be in the paper Tuesday.

Hope it's above the fold!

I handed Andy my grandfather's 400 and he was all over the place in a good way, wow!

Another stellar meeting, great to see our friends! Sure, once a year, but so much fun!

My son studied with Andy for a number of years. He is a force of nature! I'd be thrilled to have that much energy now let alone 30 years from now. I'm glad some more folks got to meet him; it is a treat to hear war stories from "the good old days".

Roger Wood (Shofar) is from Los Angeles. Perhaps you are not counting him as he was here with the band Sonora Tropicana he was touring with. Everybody think or pray positive thoughts for Roger - the band is back on their way to L.A. and they are driving straight through! Finished the last Chicago area set late last night at Mi Tierra en la Villita at 25th and S Kedzie after which we were treated to the best traditional Mexican feast I've ever had, and from there their road trip home began!

As Jim wrote it was a great time, and if I may add, the dinner many of us went to afterward at Alfie's Inn near Jim's house was the icing on the cake!

Best wishes,

John Mohan

Thanks, John. Glad you enjoyed both the Hang and Alfies - it's a Glen Ellyn institution.
