Who is making an outstanding cornet these days? Might be looking to level up - looking for a free-blowing horn with great 1st/3rd slide action, capable of a wide array of tonal nuances. For jazz, primarily. Any exceptional horns out there? |

What's your budget? Are you like me and sticking to <$1000, or sky's the limit? Established brand matters or a smaller shop?
Cheers,

Well - sky's the limit within reason. I probably can't afford Monette, but would definitely consider a custom horn.

What the heck does that mean? "Sky's the limit within reason"? Seems contradictory. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

A pretty bold statement. I find it hard to believe that any instrument reaches "standard in the music business" level... not even the beloved Bach 37.
These are wonderful instruments (Getzen 800) but there are a bunch of other worthy cornets:
Bach 184
Stomvi
Blackburn (top of the pile IMO)
Schilke
Yamaha (though I'm not a fan)
Kanstul
Besson
amoung others... _________________ Freelance Performer/Educator

Would this be your first cornet? If so, you might consider getting a less expensive popular model, used if you can find one, and live with it for awhile. Try different mouthpiece configurations. Get some experience under your belt so you can see what you like/don't like before you move up to a more expensive pro or custom instrument.
For jazz, you would also want to decide whether you want to go down the long cornet or shepherd's crook short model path.
Here are a few suggestions:
Yamaha 2310 (long model) or earlier versions
Yamaha 2330 (short model) or earlier versions
Getzen Capri 500 series (short model)
Getzen Eterna 700 series (short model)
Getzen Eterna 800 series (short model)
Kanstul 730 (long model)
Kanstul 731 (short model)
Austin Custom Brass doublers cornet (short model)
Dillon cornet (short model) _________________ Bb Yamaha Xeno 8335IIS

At the Chicago hang Sunday I gave the Smith Watkins a pretty thorough go, comparing it to my favourite uber-warm made before 1905 shepherd's crook. SW took first place, in every way! Despite my expectation that it would be bright. |

I don't know if Leigh's taking the Eclipse Bb cornet to ITG, but if he is and you're gonna be there you really should try it out.
The Eclipse blows away my Smith-Watkins K2 - it's the only cornet I've ever played that does. |

On this note, I'm now very grateful the sale didn't work out back in the day (as I'm overjoyed by my Monette 'CORNETTE' - and you can read a recent thread by Dan Pearlman about his experience with his horn) but occasionally you can find older Chicago-made more 'conventional' Monette cornets as well as the larger 900 series ones for sale. www.thompsonmusic.com is typically your best bet for keeping an eye out for these.
Some years ago Dillon Music in NJ had a mid 80s Monette cornet that was silver plated. I got to play a few notes on it and it was far and away the best instrument (period) I had played up until that point.
Beyond what Dave has been doing, there are a number of interesting custom and excellent production models to try. As your goal isn't simply to play Arban or British Brass Band pieces, the fact that manufacturers have been somewhat more adventurous with different cornet designs, you've simply got to play as many as you can to determine what color palate is right for you.
Getzens of all shapes and sizes are excellent and reliable. Several excellent custom makers have already been mentioned in this thread.
If you're mainly looking for a non-trumpet solo voice, there are other factors you can consider, as well - hybrid puje/flumpet/etc type-instruments. Tricked-out Bb trumpets specialized to be quite diffuse or vocal, etc.
What are your musical goals in exploring a new instrument choice?
Best,

Schilke XA1 and Getzen 3850 are a couple nice ones that are reasonably priced. _________________ "Brass bands are all very well in their place - outdoors and several miles away ." - Sir Thomas Beecham |
