Great playing from John McNeil. Kind of 'out' in terms of his harmonic approach, though his range and tone remind me of Chet Baker.

Did you have a specific video in mind? There's no video on your link.
Yes, John Mcneil is a great guy and great teacher. _________________ Sima, Kanstul 1525 Flugel and Kanstul pocket trumpet. Olds Super |

Those SteepleChase albums he recorded are all very interesting. I got to see him with a local rhythm section live around the time that he recorded this.
He has a wicked sense of humor. _________________ Jeff Helgesen

I was lucky enough to study with him for several years. Great guy, great player, great sense of humor. He's also a major inspiration as he suffers from Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. Here's a great article about him from the NY Times; www.nytimes.com/2007/02/15/arts/music/15mcne.html _________________ Tom Barreca

I saw him live about a dozen years ago. I thought he was hilarious, though I think some of the people in the audience didn't quite know what to think about his sense of humor.
He also has a book about the history of jazz trumpeters that is very good. _________________ Brent |

Yes!
This article is wonderful, and I remember enjoying seeing it in print a decade ago when it came out. Mr. McNeil taught (teaches?) at the New England Conservatory when I was a student there, and not only is his a singular and vital musical voice, but it was clear from the maturity and accomplishments of his students that he's also a fine teacher.
His book, The Art of Jazz Trumpet is wonderful both for the polemics he intrepidly delves into for the sake of his art, as it is for the brilliantly-practical etudes and 'articulation studies' that fill the second half of the book. I've taught a number of students from these modestly-titled 'articulation studies' referring to them as the "Clarke Studies of jazz." --- they're excellent!
Anyway, after graduating NEC, I was down in NYC and had the pleasure of hearing some of his shows in Brooklyn - rereading this article brings back some warm-and-fuzzies.
Happy practicing!

Am usually not a fan of thin tone, bur John McNeil does it very well, and certainly has the bebop licks down. Great vid |

I remember the Shaggs.
I really wish I could see a band performing their material. It would be interesting to see what he is doing with it and the band name is perfect, it was their biggest hit. _________________ Kurt Magnuson

1: saying that john McNeil has a thin tone
2)saying that he has "the bebop licks down" which implies that Mcneil (or any jazz player for that matter) simply has to learn "the bebop licks" shed them over and over and be a jazz player.
I can't believe somebody would write those things where people can see it _________________ Mouthpiece Maker

Yes. And it's wrong on both counts. His tone isn't thin and his playing isn't "bebop licks". He has a personal style and inovative phrasing. _________________ Sima, Kanstul 1525 Flugel and Kanstul pocket trumpet. Olds Super |
