|
|
I'm a hobbyist tech. I just purchased a Los Angeles Olds Super cornet on Ebay. Two valves are missing, and the casings are rather beaten up.
Makes you wanna cry.
I plan to get the Ferree's P100 thread mandrels to remedy the situation, but they list four sizes: 48/64, 50/64, 52/64, and 54/64. Does anyone know which size would work for these valves?
Also, I've been told that Ambassador valves will fit this cornet, but would those be valves from an Ambassador trumpet, or an Ambassador cornet? |

Sorry I can't help with the bottom cap thread pitch. However, you'll want to find a donor Ambassador cornet with the square cross bar valve guides/double slot spring barrel for that vintage. Good luck! _________________ James Becker

Charlie Melk is famously busy working on restoring on old horns, including a LOT of Olds trumpets and cornets. He can probably help you out with information and/or parts or perhaps tell you were to go to find what you need. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

I had a similar Olds Super Cornet (1938) repaired by Greg Moore in Parma, Ohio. Greg may be able to tell you the size of the casing tools he used on my horn last year. Once you get it fixed, you are in for a sublime experience. My primary horn is a Selmer Paris--however, it spends a lot more time in its case since Greg fixed up the Olds Super. Now I just have to convince one of my band directors to let me switch from bone to cornet once in a while!
Take care,

Talk to Curtis at Ferrees Tools, he'll have an idea as to what you need. They can make any size you require. It looks to me like you'll need more than one threader as you work it back into shape. Ferrees catalog has a table of threaders and the instruments they fit. I'd say you'll need a valve casing mandrel as well, maybe more than one as you bring it back to round. This is a complex repair you're taking on, good luck!
