Define "portable".

Check out the Peak music stands. I don't know if that's what a colleague was using, but hers folded up like that and seemed sturdy. I liked it because the desk folded up so small. |

I got a used Peak stand on craigslist for a very nice price and it's proven to be very nice.
I've got a folding K&M that works very nicely, but I'd prefer to have a solid desk.
Portastand also makes nice products. I would have gotten one if I hadn't landed the deal on the Peak. Might still someday... _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

The best wire stand I've found is the K&M. Way better than most though it's not as good as a solid one.
I'm looking at the ones by Hercules. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Peak - $35 and it will get you everywhere you need to go. It's stable, sturdy, lightweight, and functionally is the equivalent of a Manhasset or Wenger.
The National Guard Band I'm in uses these. Ours have taken a fair bit of abuse and are still going strong. _________________ Patrick Gleason

Huh. I thought they were more than this, though looking on Amazon, that's exactly right. Nice deal. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

I love my Desca stand. Really great stuff. I've had mine for like 2 years now and it's going strong. _________________ Yamaha 8310Z trumpet

I have one of those. I haven't used it since I was in high school a thousand years ago.
No band leader wants to see wire stands on a gig, because it looks like, well, beginner band. Especially outdoors, where even the slightest puff of a breeze will send your music flying in all directions.
If I really need portable, I use one of the Peak models. The lowest priced one is fairly thin and doesn't stay stable when extended for playing while standing, especially with a heavy book, so I have one of the slightly more expensive models.
If I know the walk from the car won't be bad, I usually bring a 'real' Manhasset fixed stand with me, because they're bulletproof and the feet don't take up nearly as much space, especially on a crowded stage. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

The K&M made "wire" stand is way more sturdy and just as portable. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

I have one of those. It's all one piece, but folds up pretty small. Pretty durable for a wire stand. It worked for the 3 ring binders of music my septet used/uses.
I haven't used the vintage Hamilton, but if I had to use a wire stand, the K&M is the best I've used. I'd still rather use a Manhasset or Peak, no question. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

The Hamilton has no clamps. I hate clamps. Clamps fail. The vintage Hamilton uses friction fit with some very stiff springs that are so well made, 70-year old stands are working just like new.
Depends on what you need, obviously. But I still maintain it's the best "wire" stand.
