Check out this link. It is one of Jeff's Students. I believe his name is Micah and he is about 18 years of age.

Lloyd,

I need to make a few things clear.

I am not going to take credit for Micah's development, as he was already a fine player before he started taking lessons from me. He is one of those guys who would have done well no matter who his teacher was.

The recording is of The Dallas Area Youth Jazz Orchestra, my summer jazz band of mostly high school students. Micah was a hs senior when he recorded this (2002).

The 2003 DAYJO CD is nearing completion. I will post several of the charts when I get a chance. Heavy-duty trumpet content!

Thank you, Lloyd.

He's closer to 20 now and a good friend of mine here at TCU. He is a great player, especially playing lead as the mp3 can attest to.

Don't be modest Jeff, surely you can think of a few teachers who would have insisted he convert to a smile embouchure

That is very modest, yet I think it is true and not true. There are a some students that I think do well with any teacher. It will always remain unknown if they would have done better with another teacher. The only thing you can say is probably that he (Micah) didn't do worse under your guidance and I think I am not far from the truth if I guess he did better when you taught him, so your statement is not altogether true.

Alas, it is true more than once that even players who could do with any teacher are spoiled by the wrong teacher. I, myself, was a student that did great whatever they told me. That was, until I started at the conservatory, got very serious and got the wrong teacher. He did more wrong than good and I got into trouble, big time.

So, maybe the only truth is that there are teachers, some are good, some are bad, and some are just good for a certain kind of players.

I think I know in what category I want to place you, Jeff

Nice playing....great sound all round the horn.

Quick question...

I noticed that you play dry.....Are you able to do the BE excersises on a dry embouchure?

I always thought the lips couldn't roll in and out if they are gripping the mouthpiece.

Keep up the the good work..

gav

ps. happy birthday

Hi Gio.

Wish you were here in Dallas this summer. I'd have a gig for you!

That chart is a lot harder than it sounds, as your bandmates discovered.

Congratulations on the nice playing, and especially for going for the double D. Scary chops for a 16 year old. Then again, I hope that BE ushers in a whole generation of players with chops like yours. Someday.

Your biggest challenge at this point is to deal with your ego. Lets face it, you are much better than your peers. Almost every high-level student I've had has gone through the growing pains of learning to deal with success. Its a good problem to have, but its still a problem. When people hold you in awe, its good to remember that you are buzzing on the end of a pipe!

Thanks for posting, and good luck!

Jeff
