Hi All,
The cornet below belonged to one of our early Bandmasters at Creswick Band. We're pretty sure he won it in a competition, and I've been tasked with finding out a bit more about the horn.
Engraving on the bell reads
"Orpheus"
Manufactured expressly for
Sutton Bros. Melbourne
H. Sutton & Co
Ballarat
Must be a stencil - any help appreciated, it actually plays OK given age and condtion.
Thanks for any help.
Cheers,

Thanks Mike for sending me that information - I think those are much more recent instruments than this one.
So, not sure it's the answer, as I think the Orpheus name was chosen by the resellers, Suttons, who were an Australian music supply firm that existed from about the 1890s and closed I think in the 1920s.
From looking at the horn I'd say it's late 19th Century.
I do like the double-action waterkey...
Once again, thanks Mike
Cheers,

Very similar to the imported Carl Fischer. Here are pics and some info suggesting that it may have been made by B&F of Austria. (Bohland and Fuchs) who also probably made some of the JW Peppers.

Thanks Andy, that does indeed look very similar.
Looking to get our restored as well, for display.
Cheers,
