I recently saw Cronkhite Cases on sale on Torpedo Bags, and I'm interested in purchasing either a single or triple to use as a gig bag.

Are they sturdy and protective? Can someone post some pictures of theirs in action?

The Cronkhite "cases" are well made and about as protective as a gig bag gets. I have a leather triple. Very sturdy. You can fit just about any combination of three horns plus some accessories.

We recently purchased the Glenn Cronkhite Custom Cases "library," and are making them all in Minneapolis. I have a few major brand Chinese-made gig bags in the shop to compare, and his standards (and ours) are much higher. Lots of leather finishes to choose from, too!

Here's the page. We have 3 models listed, but we'll get the other trumpet models up soon (flugelhorn, pics, double, rotary, etc.):

https://torpedobags.com/product-category/cronkhite-trumpet-bags/

And don't forget, Glenn Cronkhite Custom Cases makes gig bags, and Torpedo Bags makes cases.

Yeah, I know.

This is just one’s man opinion, but as nice as the gig bags look, the paramount consideration in a case is protection. Capacity, weight, looks, and other considerations seem to me to be much less important. I would be sick if something bad happened to one of my horns, particularly if it could have been prevented by a better case.

I bought a Torpedo Loredo trumpet case (brown leather) and I love it. I also have on order a re-imagined Coyote in brown leather. The peace of mind is easily worth the price.

Besides, the leather Torpedo bags look as nice as any gig bag.

But, a gig bag that was designed not for the actual instrument, but for all of the music, stands, mutes, computers and paraphernalia… hmmm, that sounds interesting.

Regards,
Grits

There's your honest answer, from the guy who makes and sells both.

Thanks for replying guys! I've been using an old outlaw for a gig bag and Coyote for my main case. I'm in the market to upgrade both of them. Looks like I have a lot of options. It'll come down to taste!

Hi Grits

Although not actually a gig bag, I find the Protec trombone mute bag to be ideal in this regard, as least for what I carry:

http://www.protecstyle.com/product-p/m401.htm

I have moved the modular divider, so that it is attached to one wall only, which basically gives an internal pocket on one side and a big open space.

I have an older version of this mute bag, but it doesn't look to have changed other than slightly in terms of the styling.

It is just the right size to hold even a few pretty large music folders (at one stage I had my brass band folder and two folders for deps in my bag), a small fold-up metal music stand fits along the bottom, and I can fit a few small bottles of water, a couple of in the bell trumpet/cornet stands, and a fair number of mutes on top of my music stand, with sufficient space for a lunch box, flask and other things I might take with me on a long gig.

The large pocket on the outside holds a fair number of smaller accessories, mouthpiece pouch, small stand light, stationery, music clips, band ties, glasses etc.

Basically I have this in mine currently:

Brass Band folder
Two small cardboard orchestra folders
Fold up K&M metal music stand
2 K&M trumpet/cornet stands
Small bottles of water
A quad mouthpiece pouch containing a spare mouthpiece cut for sleeves and a James R New 6.5 and 6.25 sleeve for my Yamaha and Bach trumpets respectfully + spare cornet mouthpiece + spare flugel mouthpiece
Tim Wendt's leadpipe swab (H W Brass Saver is in my double trumpet/cornet case).
Band Tie
Black Tie for depping with other bands
Black Bow Tie for depping with other bands
Red brooch/bangle as something red for orchestra uniform
Valve oil/slide grease since my double trumpet/flugel case has no compartment for oil/grease
Pencil case containing stationery/pencil in magnetic holder/tool for tightening top of stand to stop it flipping backwards with a heavier folder
Pencil case containing music clips and batteries/spare batteries
Mighty Bright light
Lyre (I've never once used it, and it was in the case of a used cornet I bought once)
Spare (previous prescription) reactions glasses which double as sunglasses for outside playing
Denis Wick straight, cup, ET and plunger mutes.
H&B Bucket mute

I could easily fit in quite a few more mutes (I've recently also carried a H&B straight and cup, and two spare plungers for colleagues).

Admittedly this bag gets rather heavy with all this in it, especially when I am carrying extra folders for deps, but of course it isn't the bag which is heavy, but all the stuff I have crammed into it lol. This bag holds a surprising amount for its reasonable size owing to it being almost a cube and being soft-sided, and the shoulder strap makes it easy to carry. I've had this bag for years, and haven't yet found anything better for carrying my accessories.

Take care

Lou

Louise, thanks for the info. I never would have guessed that everything you listed would fit into that one bag. The price is very reasonable as well. Actually, it seems almost ideal...

...almost. You have to admit that a similar Glenn Cronkhite case in leather that matched my Torpedo Loredo case would be, well, nice.

Not that I am vain or materialistic.

Warm regards,
Grits

I agree that Lou is always VERY thorough and polite; there are not many folks here who always make a point of responding to others' comments.

Most of us could take a lesson in manners from Lou.

I feel compelled to remark on Steve's qualifications for commenting on manners. Steve resides in the geographic center of niceness (fans of Prairie Home Companion will understand the reference).
