Maybe with a hacked version of a Silent Brass mute? I tried taking one once and amped up the signal, thinking I could record that. As soon as it was amped it sounded like crap. The mic in it is probably good enough for listening with ear buds but that's it.

Is it possible to use something like a Silent Brass mute and mic and record that?

It's going to be recording from "all up in the bell." That's what I was thinking when I tried it before, not expecting it to sound like crap when amped up. I was going to try taking that and added a virtual room with some reverb.

I want to understand your request. Do you mean recording the sound of the trumpet with the mute stuck in it, external recording mic, or do you mean recording the electronically produced "natural trumpet sound' like you would have when using the earphones?

Just plug the headphone out into your recording device. Presto.

Yes, this will work fine as long as the input on your recording device is a line level input and not a mic level input. If the line level inputs are RCA jacks, it is not a problem to buy a 3.5mm headphone jack to RCA jack adaptor - they are available at Radio Shack and on Amazon.

There is another thread or two discussing this.. Yes you can manage to record and/or send the signal out of a Silent Brass unit, but don't expect it to sound like a trumpet. The mic is not designed to produce the spectrum of sound and it's jammed way up the bell - pretty horrendous if you ask me.

I'll second this - if you have the means to record, you're better off getting a budget microphone than trying to record with the Silent Brass mute. Unless you are in a place where you simply can't have the volume of an un-muted trumpet, the SB is probably not going to get you where you want to go.

If one finds the sound that occurs in the headphones acceptable, then they should be able to record an acceptable sound. And this might be good enough for the OP's purposes.

Before we jump to ruling this out completely perhaps we should understand what the OP's intent is for the recordings?

I've recorded myself playing along to Abersold backing tracks, with the headphone jack of the Silent Brass plugged into my Zoom H2 recorder. It's definitely not as nice as recording into a nice microphone/preamp, but it's certainly good enough to record yourself practicing for your own personal review.

It's always a good idea to record yourself practicing and to listen back to it!
