I just bought a Conn 60B (the "Super Connstellation" model from the late 60's/early 70's, not the older one).

It has an incorrect (and badly mismatched) bottom cap on one of the valves. Does anyone have suggestions on where I could obtain one of the correct type?

Charlie Melk (my first resort) said he doesn't have any.

All help would be appreciated.

I don't have the horn yet. Here is the link to the eBay auction (once you get there, click "see original listing"):

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Conn-60B-Gold-Lacquered-Lead-Jazz-Trumpet-W-Case/302352131060?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

Picture #7 gives the best view of the two good caps and the bad substitute one (especially since you can use the mouse-over zoom feature).

I think Charlie Melk would have taken Allied into account when he replied.

However, I am checking back with him just in case.

The 18B, 20B, 100B and 1000B have a similar looking bottom valve cap - not identical but a full set might look OK. These are available from Allied - you would need to have your tech measure the ID and thread to be sure they would fit.

ClassicTrumpet.com always seems to have interesting parts - you might check.

Then of course you could put the good ones on 1st and 2nd and opt for a heavyweight 3rd valve cap.

By the way - congratulations on your acquisition.

Hi Andy -- Thanks for the suggestions and the congratulations! I'll take a look at near-match alternatives from Conn as well as custom aftermarket options. I will also check out the ClassicTrumpet website.

Hi A.N.A.Mendez -- You had my hopes up for a second there! How about sending me a pic via PM just in case? Thanks for your comments!

Call Dick Akright's shop in Oakland and ask for Dick or Brian. They have hundreds probably thousands of caps. If you send over a picture, they can probably find one for you.

I thought Dick retired a few years ago.

Dick did retire from working in the shop only handling bigger business stuff a few years ago, but now is back in the shop a couple days a week.
