Hi all,

Does anyone have any suggestions on a good backup horn for an Olds Recording player? I have a 1964 Recording that is completely original and has a fabulous sound especially in the upper register.

I'm mindful it's over 50 years old and I don't currently have a backup horn. All my work is Big Band/Commercial. I use a Curry 3C mouthpiece mostly.

Looking for something reliable with a similar character to the recording but cheapish.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I play an 80 year old New York Bach as my main horn and there's no reason why its age should be a factor if you maintain it. That being said, I can never be accused of convincing someone who wants to buy a new horn not to do it....and it sounds to me you want to buy a new horn, so let's do it! As was already mentioned, you could buy another Recording or even a Super Recording. If you wanted to go the less expensive route you could also go with some of the less expensive new horns made by Carol Brass, or the Adams Prologue. If money isn't an issue (lol) check out the other Adams horns. They are simply amazing.

But do they "a similar character to the recording"? I think he was looking for something specific, not just any good horn.

This is a tall order. as the Recording is such a unique horn. I would say if you wanted something with somewhat similar playing feel your best bet may be to stick with Olds and go down a few notches on the model list, maybe try a Studio, Special, or even dare I say, the **bassador. Or if you keep your eyes peeled you might come across a cosmetically challenged Recording for "cheapish."

Once you have an idea of what you are looking for, you could contact the famous eBayer Quinntheeskimo and tell him what you are looking for and at what price range. He seems to be able to find just about anything. The other famous eBayer hotdeal1smoko does have a nice looking Fullerton Super up for sale at $750 US.

That's a good point LittleRusty. I had a Recording once, and there really isn't much out there like it, is there? The Ambassador might work in a pinch. I do sometimes wish I would have kept that Recording.

It depends on what you mean by "cheapish". I sold a Re-o-Loy Recording for about $700 on eBay. I'd cleaned it, replaced the corks and felts, and repaired a somewhat crunched bell (fortunately, the engraving was untouched). It was missing about 30% of its lacquer, but still a nice looking horn from the seats. I think the fact that the bell had been repaired took about $200 off that price.

Meanwhile, the buyer still complained that it didn't sound like his old Super Recording.

Oh yeah, my point. The offset valves and 3rd slide trigger are simply unique to the Recording. If that's OK with you, try a Special or see if you luck into a Super.

I have a 1955 Special with 2-piece valve casings and all-brass bell. I've never played a Recording. How similar do they play?

Thanks for all the replies.

Tried an Ambassador a while back didn't get on with it.
By cheapest I mean probably less than $750 (although I'm in UK so about £600 UK).

I realise that there's nothing like my recording and I'm having it serviced in a couple of months but looking for a spare in case it's needed.

Thanks

My former student is selling her '63-ish Super for around $500. Used to be my horn, but I sold it when I scored a '53 Super. It was a good player, and she really loved it, but she is going to a school of music and needed a Bach.

PM me if you are interested...

Bill

I have a 38 Super, and a 62 Tri Color Special.
Both going on the chopping block as soon as I get my 1954 Recording back from Full Monty Restoration (including valve job) at Kanstul.

You're in good company. The late great Uan Raisey played a custom version of the Recording for most of his career: Rasey started using an Olds Recording-model trumpet, made for him in 1949 shortly after he was hired by MGM. In an interview, he related how they made it using the Olds' Ambassador valve section, with the bell length the same as the Super, and the mouthpipe from the old Super Recording. In 1974, he began playing also a King Silver Flair trumpet, which he used for the Chinatown soundtrack, and alternated between the two.[6]
When I lived in Chicago in the '70's, a few of the 1st call studio guys were playing them: Russ Iverson and Art Hoyle who, reputedly, collected them and had an attic full! Do like Art and find another one.[/b]

The only thing similar I've played would be the Olds Special, the all brass one pre 1950

There's a recording on ebay for £650 BIN. (Correction - sure it had a BIN of 650 earlier, but currently on bids only)

Looks like it's got a few dents on it, but if it's a player it might be worth it - can always get it straightened out at a later date?
