I don't really know much about Branson, but my general impression would be that it's not a place that would be likely to have much work for trumpet, or probably many other brass players. Guitar, bass, other strings, drums and keys, probably. If I hoped to play trumpet full or even part time I doubt Branson would be a place to try to do it. Just my general impression, sounds like it matches your experience there.
Regarding teaching lessons in the school system: in my area, I've found that the ONLY way to do that is register with the school district and go through the process, including background checks. I did that five years ago, and now have as many students as I can handle doing it part time. Before going through the process though, I also found that contacting individual band directors was 100% useless. Because of the current climate of security and cautiousness in the public school system, it's pretty understandable, really.

Shaft,
If you would double on banjo, piano, guitar or pedal steel you might make it. Unfortunately, it is getting more difficult to make it in your area. My brother was there last week. He talked to some of the other local musicians that were working the shows and the pay there seems to keep going down not up.
If you enjoy country music or western swing which uses horns, everything in that area and Nashville has moved to Dallas. I have friends that are making a decent living playing western swing there.
Sorry for the downturn and wish you well in your travels,

Sorry Shaft. Years ago the puppet masters who drive the marketing of the music industry decided the trumpet was no longer a pop instrument. It became old school hearkening back to the horn section days of Motown and Memphis.
Stage shows for the baby boomers provided some work for awhile.
Over supply and under demand for professional musicians coming out of music schools has been a big problem for decades now. Music schools have no problem charging literally $100s of thousands of dollars for under graduate and post graduate work with little chance of getting a meaningful job.
My own granddaughter, who is a beast on clarinet, after one year decided it was too risky to stay a performance major with a full ride + and a 4.5 GPA.
She is changing her major to environmental law. Whew!
I wish you all the best. Try not to be bitter. I hope you will find your way with relationships and music. Branson was always a little off for me.

Ironic - once upon a time wasn't Danny Davis and his Nashville Brass a big draw in Branson? _________________ Getzen Eterna Severinsen

A number of years ago, our Civil War brass band was booked at Silver Dollar City for a week. Had a fun time, but a week-long gig is not the same as trying to make a living at it, for sure. _________________ "Brass bands are all very well in their place - outdoors and several miles away ." - Sir Thomas Beecham |

Branson has a reputation as being a hot spot for Elvis tribute artists. Most of the fire of his music comes from the trumpet, imho. I've been the musical director for some 4 years, play keys more than I do trumpet, and also lead BGV's. We'll be playing Branson this September. |
