I have been looking for good lyrical/melodic studies to play. I don't want anything fancy. I want something simple with opportunities to be very expressive. These don't have to be written for trumpet. I've played through a few opera arias, and jazz ballads.
Any suggestions?
Anything that is free and online would be great! |

I really like In the Singing Style by Phil Collins. I used it while I was in school and I have my private students use it as well. There are a lot of melodies in the book and it meets all of your criteria. Except for the free part. Here is a link to somewhere that sells it.

Here are some books that might be of interest to you:
First, books of songs such as those from a Fake or Real Book (Broadway melodies, etc.).
Second, books of lyrical etudes and vocalises, such as:
Marco Bordogni: vocalise collections. They are available free online (IMSLP), or you can purchase collections of them transcribed for trumpet, such as Porret’s “Vingt-Quatre Vocalises” (which are also moving transpositions), Clark and O’Loughlin’s “Melodious Trumpet Etudes” or Mark Tezak’s “Melodious Etudes” (which have piano parts).
Vincent Cichowicz: “Flow Studies” 1 & 2 (which include vocalizes from Bordogni, Lutgen and others – lots of valve movement here; not sustained notes)
Larry Clark: “Studies in Lyricism” (which includes vocalizes from Concone, Marchesi and Panofka)
Phil Collins: “In the Singing Style”, “Pops Orchestra.”
Giuseppe Concone: vocalise collections. They are available free online (IMSLP), or you can purchase collections of them transcribed for trumpet such as John Korak’s “The Complete Solfeggi” and John Sawyer’s “Lyrical Studies.”
Max Havart: “167 Etudes D’Expression”
Jonathan Gresham: “Plainchant for Trumpet” (lyrical studies based on Gregorian chants)
John Korak: “Bel Canto Studies” (vocalizes from Lutgen, Marchesi, Panofka, Tosti and others)
Phil Snedecor: “Lyrical Etudes” 1 & 2, “Etudes in the Operatic Style”
William Vacchiano: “The Art of Bel Canto”
Paolo Toscano (Ricordi): "Play Puccini" (10 transcribed arias for trumpet and piano)
Have fun! |

I agree with Dayton's reference to Marco Bordogni's Vocalise. Based on the description on what you looking for they are right up your alley. They are fairly easy range wise and fairly uncomplicated rhytmically, with lots of chances to express yourself. They are available all over the web.
you can find them easily on Jay Lichtmann's page. Mr Lichtmann should be canonized for providing such great stuff on his web pages BTW !!

I second the Snedecor book. Also- what's wrong with using the Art of Phrasing section in Arbans? Tons of tunes, many old opera arias and vocal works that are quite melodic if one actually tries to make music rather than just play through them. Good luck. |

I second, (or third) the Bordogni, Concone and Cichowicz books.
Oh, BTW, that's Giuseppe Concone not Chile Concone. (Sorry, couldn't resist.) _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Most of these studies are in Vincent Cichowicz Flow Studies Volume two. The font is exactly the same. www.studio259productions.com. |
