Got a box full of mouthpieces to try out on the front porch this afternoon.

In search of something a little better for the picc.

Bach 7E, 7EW, Curry 5P and 7P. Hopefully at least one of them will work better.

The Warburton 6S with S10* backbore is working well for me on my Schilke P5-4. I'm using the Warburnite (hard rubber) top. I have a silverplated one I might be willing to sell or trade.

Hello all,
I agree with Ed. I too use the Warburton 6S. I have a 10*, 8* and a S6 I go back and forth on depending on the piece and day. My 11AX just doesn"t have the vibrant sound that I was looking for. I had an 11BX made up thinking that would give me more lip room, but really didn"t provide the support of playing high and delicate enough.

Interesting. I'm not very familiar with the Warburton system.

His size 5 rim measures .640", the next bigger number is.010" smaller, the next smaller# is .010" bigger, and so forth. S cup is good, not sure if anyone plays his SV on picc?

For me, YMMV, reducing the diameter helps me more with picc than reducing the cup. Have used a Schilke 13B for years.

Of course a really deep cup does not work (for me).

A lot of folks like the DE Curry cups for picc. I like them for everything else.

I also like short model horns and cannot play my piece on a long model picc.

When you find it you will know. Be patient and have fun

Bach picc mouthpieces never worked for me.

Stork was OK.

GR was leagues better than either.

Almost...

Warb 5 is .650 - otherwise correct, incrementally bigger or smaller by .010".

Mmm I never had any luck with Bach either - Stork a bit better.

Haven't played the GR picc pieces.

It was a Reeves (40DPC) that killed the picc safari for me - impeccable intonation, superb response and exactly the tone I wanted.

In case I wasn't clear before, I'm not particularly unhappy with what I'm using now (Curry 3P), mainly because the rim is one I'm extremely comfortable with. But, I've been thinking of going smaller in the rim, for the same reason most people do, I suppose.

I'm pretty happy with the way it plays, but if there is a better option with a slightly smaller rim I can get along with as well, I wouldn't mind finding it.

The Bach models I listed above are often recommended (or at least used to be) so I decided to give them a shot. The other two Curry options are just the next two smaller sizes he offers.

I am seeing a mature player who is happy with his equipment and his setup and is achieving everything he needs or wants.

i recommend changing something. That will be one less player to compete with me.

I think you need to define what success looks like. Richer sound, better articulation, more solid high register.

What exactly do you need from a mouthpiece because all I am reading is "I want to see if there is something better"

If you cannot see the target you cannot hit it. Changing something with no reason and in the hopes that you might get something better usually results in pain misery and disappointment.

Bflatman,

I won't deny you have a point, of the 'if ain't broke, don't fix it' variety.

That said, I haven't really spent all that much time on picc and hadn't given it much direct examination before. I had one appropriate mouthpiece, and that was good enough.

That changed recently, when it really became a large percentage of my playing for quite a while. I had not experimented much (at all really) with Picc mouthpiece options, because for the longest time I only owned a few cornet shank pieces, and they were all of the rather deep variety and not really usable for this.

I mainly wanted to give it at least as much consideration as any other horn I play, like trumpet and flugel. So far, I'm not seeing a whole lot of difference between the curry pieces, other than feeling slightly more cramped as the rim gets smaller.

I don't really like either of the Bach's, which has served mainly to remind me why I don't use Bach's anymore.

The only real 'target' to use your terminology is to find something that might feel a little more efficient. I've been really busy and I'm running out of time for this trial period, but so far I may either end up staying with my current setup, or going one rim size smaller and leaving everything else the same.

You might try a Stork Vacchiano 3P. Slightly smaller rim ID; the bore (#25) and backbore might be slightly bigger than the Curry 3P.
