Hello,
last week i did a wonderful workshop and the teacher told us about Louis Smith, a wonderful trumpetplayer i never heard of before.
I found his bluenote album Here Comes Louis Smith on youtube and really love it. Incredible bebop chops and Cannonball as a sideman!
Man, i'm happy and grateful for the possibility to check out another great player.
Cheers,
Tobias

Also, check out Smithville from just a bit later. Also on Blue Note.

One of those overlooked players. I believe he was cousins with Booker Little.

Louis Smith encouraged me when I was very young. He held an improvisation workshop back then. His playing was excellent. It was my first time improvising in public. He was very nice to me and that day had a profound effect on my life. This was I think January or February of 1999 at the Bird of Paradise club in Ann Arbor, MI (unfortunately this club is closed).

Louis made those albums for Blue Note with Cannonball, Tommy Flanagan and other great artists. He also played and hung with Miles, Dizzy and I think Thad Jones. It's true he was Booker Little's cousin, but I didn't learn that until way later.

During one period of time in his later years, he released around 4 albums in a very short time period...Just a couple years or so. He was putting out records like it was nobody's business. This was in the early 2000's I think...But I can't totally remember. I never technically studied with him and he was already pretty much retired from teaching by then. But I saw him a number of times and he always encouraged me.

He passed away about a year ago and is dearly missed.
