The "Gone But Not Forgotten Lick" over a minor chord goes from the 9 up a half step to the minor third then back to the major 7 then to the 9 again then to the root and then back down to the 5. E.g. over a C minor chord you would play D, Eb, B, D, C, G.

Like the "Cry Me A River" lick, it works over lots of chord types and you can hear it in players dating back to Louis Armstrong, though it is more typically a bop lick. Now "Cry Me A River" obviously takes its name from the opening phrase of the song it is named after, but what about "Gone But Not Forgotten"? Are its origins forgotten?

There is a beautiful ballad by Tommy Turrentine called "Gone But Not Forgotten" written for Fats Navarro, but it does not seem old enough and is also so obscure that it surely cannot be the source. The only version of the tune that I have managed to find doesn't even seem to have the GBNF lick in the melody.

So where does it come from? I can only imagine that it might actually refer to a lyric within a tune of a different name. Does anybody know?

Thanks,
Rob

In his book, "Clear Solutions for Jazz Improvisors," Jerry Coker briefly describes the lick and writes that it "derived from a tune having the same title," but he gives no further information.

Maybe its name should be changed to the "Three and One" lick.

I've wondered about this too. This appears to be the one.
