I just picked up this Aristocrat on Ebay for 66 bucks. The lacquer is pretty shot but I figure as long as the valves are ok it was a decent deal. What do you think?

Also, I no longer have the Manchester Brass horn in my signature but I do have the Yamaha piece.

I had one, a great sounding trumpet. The one I had, the lacquer was in terrible shape, so I boiled it in the bathtub. It was a good looking raw brass trumpet.

Wow, boiled it? Like actual boiling water or just hot out of the tap? And that's all it took was hot water to de-lacquer it?

I did the same with my vintage Henri Selmer B700 tb, hot water was not enough, I boiled it.

Didn't actually boiled it. Several hot baths. Then I used magic eraser to reach hard to reach areas. So it was mostly a raw brass trumpet.Looked nice and played well.

That you got a good deal on an underrated horn. Wait until you play a 400.

Yeah I'm pretty excited to get back to it. I've been playing an Ambassador for a little while and while it's decent it has some valve issues.

Hopefully the Buescher will be better. I just need something that mechanically works. I'm primarily a sax player but I go thru these phases of wanting to play trumpet which is the instrument I started on in 4th grade but then I get frustrated on how much more difficult it is to play than the sax and I drop it. I've bought and sold so many horns(just ask Trent).

I'm taking a less serious approach this time and will primarily be transcribing tunes and solos while doing a modest amount of "routines". Gonna try to just enjoy playing music and not worry about why I can't hit that high D.

Got the horn yesterday. Like the way it sounds, the blow and feels to hold but I need a 3rd valve slide ring(ambassador one doesn't fit) and the 1st and 3rd valves are hanging. Don't know what oil was previously used so I'll give it a bath tonight and try Hetman's 3. The other oils I have are probably too thin(Ultra Pure, Berp Lite).

Also noticed that the tuning slide does need to be out an inch to play in tune but once there it's pretty good intonation other than low D and C#. The 3rd slide ring will help with those notes.

So gave the horn 3 baths. Tried Hetman's 3, Blue Juice and Warburton. The 3rd valve actually cleared up but the first valve still hangs a lot. I tried stretching the spring a bit and actually oiling the valve guide runner but still hangs.

What do I do next?

I think that horn might use the red stainless springs. If so, buy a set from eBay.

Switch to the new Ultra Pure formula, way better than Hetman. #3 is probably too thick for that horn.

Swab the valves and casings really well with acetone. Watch you don't get it on the lacquer.

Thanks Tom,
Is acetone just nail polish remover? Also what to use as a swab?

Yes, but get the pure stuff.

If you don't have a cleaning rod, buy one. Flute rods work well as do dedicated trumpet rods.

Get some muslin, cut a square, pull a corner through the loop, and then over the top so as to cover the metal end with the cloth. Get it wet and go nuts in the casing.

If this isn't clear, I'll take a picture tonight.

Thanks, I'll give it a try tonight. Last night I dowsed the first valve with Ultra Pure Lite and it was a little better. Hoping cleaning with the acetone will do the trick else I'll be giving Trent a call.

As an update I have not cleaned the horn again but did douse the valves a few times with ultra pure lite and so far they are pretty good. I did notice that if I depress the first valve slightly off center to the left it never hangs. So I might be ok.
