When I recently went to Chuck Levins, the trumpet specialist said James Morrison was the best trumpet player on the planet right now. I was surprised about this because I don’t hear much about Morrison.
I’d have to say Wynton is the best. I’ll hear a recording of another trumpeter, then I’ll hear Wynton’s version and the two just can’t be compared...amazing.
In your personal opinion, who is the best player in the world?

I think that’s probably an unanswerable question. Not to take anything away from Morrison, who is incredible, but “best trumpet player” is way too vague, plus personal preferences enter into that definition.

This is a bit silly, isn't it? There is no ONE trumpet player who is the best. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

If you had to pick one, refer to the video above that I posted. Morrison IMO had by far the best performance of the bunch, and that's saying something considering the company he had on stage. _________________ Patrick Gleason

I think Morrison has a marvelous technique and a quick, brilliant mind with which he can exploit it. However, the video also proves that Arturo Sandoval is the best trumpet player on the planet sans mouthpiece.

There is a sticky second valve at about 1:36. Slow to come full up. I thought only hackers like me have that issue.

If we're going back 40 years I think there is room for more discussion.

In the last four years I have probably listened to more trumpet music and solo work than in the previous 64 combined and that was quite a bit. It is good to enjoy them all and not have to choose. I think Wynton Marsalis is pretty flawless and does all styles flawlessly. Who could play and sing "Almost Blue" with more class and emotion than Chet? Who has been more of a rock as principle than Bud Herseth and Phil Smith? I could listen to Tim Morrison for hours. And Maynard didn't just play he descended from Olympus. I saw Maynard live a couple times in the 70s and he could literally blow spit out the end of the horn. That's guts. I love 'em all. _________________ "There are two sides to a trumpeter's personality,
