I never watch 'cause its way past my bedtime but i've heard the trumpet player for the currect band is awsome and was asked who it is. I know it was Chuck Findley for awhile; does anyone know who it is these days?

Al Chez. He plays a Wild Thing. Probably the only thing we have in common (though he's got a pretty good sense of humour). You can (could, I haven't looked recently) find his pix and endorsement on Flip's website, http://www.flipoakes.com

Unless I am mistaken, Chuck Findley was on Leno, not Letterman, but its easy to get confused as they do look pretty similar.

Chuck was (still is?) on Leno and Chez on Letterman.

Alan Chez is great. You can read an interesting interview with him at http://www.cozychops.com. He tells the story of how Letterman hired him on the air - and the next day a CBS lawyer showed up at door! what a scream....

Okay, can anyone tell me why Lettergeek rarely refers to anyone (except Paul Schafer) in the band? It's like they don't exist.

When they do the "Stump the Band" bits there's a little bit of exposure for individual members. And when there's a special guest, the band gets a little time but, more often than not, nada.

At the opening of the show, Letterjerk typically says, "Please welcome my good friend Paul Schafer...."

I know from my background in TV production this is to provide a cover shot while Letterfool moves from the stage to his desk. But, come on, why does he never mention the players? Contract-stipulated payments, maybe?

Leno seems a lot more generous with his musicians.

Hey Jim, that was funny. I didn't know you were so fond of Letterwhatever. LOL.

I'd like to see both those turkeys let the bands stretch out once in awhile for the TV audience like Johnny Carson did when Doc was fronting the band.

Unless he went back...which I don't think he did...
He's not there anymore...

Conan O'Brien has a pretty wild trumpet player, Mark Pender. Who else saw the Trumpet Jesus skit?

I agree I'd like to see Letterman and Leno let the bands stretch out, but they have too many idiotic pop stars filling the music time. And remember that Johnny Carson was an amateur drummer himself and a big jazz fan. Letterno and Lenman know next to nothing about music.

If you've ever been to a "live" tonight show or letterman, then you know that they let the band unwind alittle bit during the commercial breaks to entertain the audience. The Carson years on the tonight show had some memorable music on those breaks with Doc' and the guys! You used to be able to get those break segments on satellite years back, I don't know if you still can.

The entire Letterman band is great. Paul Schaffer is spontaneously incredible! Alan Chez is excellent. Will Lee is there many times on bass. Check out Tom Malone on trombone. He not only plays trombone, but plays baritone sax, and piccolo flute on the show! It's a shame that talent like this is not often appreciated outside the musicians circles.

Pete

Tom plays trumpet too.
Letterman's favorite piece of classical music is William Tell.
That's how I got to play with the Brooklyn Philharmonic on the show.

I haven't seen/heard Tom Malone play the trumpet on the show, but it doesn't surprise me.

In the time, B.A.C( before Al Chez), Tom played the trumpet.
With Al there, the horn went in the case:-D

Alan Rubin, "Mr. Fabulous", is still in NYC. He is keeping very busy, although the studio scene died down years ago. I had a couple of nice chats with him a year ago....
