This is probably a silly post, but I just want to ask about the best way to preserve my horns and mouthpieces.
Should I put my horn in the case in between sessions, or leave it out? What about at night?
Should I take out my mouthpiece every session, or leave it in so the playing doesn’t rub off?
Should I continue to wipe my horn with a microfiber rag after use?
And any other tips you have for preserving my equipment...thanks:D |

The most damage to brass comes from condensation in the instrument, so anything you do to remove moisture will preserve your instrument. Frequent oiling not only lubricates but also coats and protects metal from corrosion. Leadpipe swabs and sponge “spitballs” can assist in clearing away moisture.
Preserving the finish is a different matter. Silver can be wiped down with glass cleaner sprayed on a cloth works great to remove the oils from your hands. Hand polishing with Hagerty’s or 3M Tarmi Shield provide protection from oxidation. Lacquer finished can be protected by wiping down with Pledge furniture wax. Raw brass, same as silver plate.
And a professional cleaning every year or two depending on how well you keep up maintenance at home.
Good luck! _________________ James Becker
